I have basically thought that my skin color was going to hold me back from getting into the college of my choice.

however, i recently found out that I am 1/8 spanish (from Spain). Does that count as AA??

1/8 I THINK is the bear minimum? CCers correct me if i'm wrong?!?

the bear minimum is all i need. :) Does Spain count as latin/hispanic??

im pretty sure half is actually the minimum. Like you check your race on Apps and if your half African American, you can check African American. However, if your 1/8 Spanish, I do not think you can check Hispanic or even Spanish -- I think anyone could claim to be 1/8 Hispanic. I could be wrong though.

im not sure where i could find out

Wasn't there something with people who were like 1/8 cherokee or something using it to their advantage? Idk, im spec.'ing. Someone correct me :)

spanish, as in spain, doesn't count as urm. if being european counted as a urm, umm that'd make no sense.

I see what you are saying matt

But Spain could be considered "Hispanic American" which is a box you can check

I know a girl who is 1/16 Native American, checked the Native American box on the application and was admitted this year to Brown with a 1700 SAT.

But I'm pretty sure being of Spanish descent does not classify you as an underrepresented minority. Europeans are considered Caucasian.

Being Spanish (as in Spain) does not technically qualify you as a URM.

1/8 means one of your GREAT-grandparents was (full-blooded) Hispanic!!!

I'd say you should be minimum 1/2. Would you consider yourself Hispanic? (If you only recently found out, I seriously doubt it.)

[To qualify for Nat'l Hispanic Scholar (CollegeBoard), you must be 1/4 Hispanic. That might be a gauge you could use.]

my mom's grandma was a full blooded Spaniard

Does that work?

I am almost positive that Spanish descent DOES NOT count as Hispanic on an app.

you can also put

Other (please specify) under the hispanic american heading

Yeah I seriously doubt that would work. I mean, you just found that out...

It bothers me when people are 1/16 Native American and say they're "native american" when they are 15/16 european and have the full opportunities everyone else has... just so they can get scholarships and stuff

i dont want scholarships, i'm paying every dollar of my tuition... i just want an equal chance to get admitted to a good college

...no it doesn't count now stop trying to find loopholes and fill out your applications honestly.

if you've been living 16+ years of your life not even knowing that you have Spainard blood in you what makes you think you count as Hispanic?

shazilla, i am completely offended that you would want to disrespect my heritage

I have basically thought that my skin color was going to hold me back from getting into the college of my choice.

your skin color isn't gonna hold you back from getting into college, if anything it's gonna be your own notion that you have to be a URM to get into a top college that's gonna keep you out

ok now i know this has to be a sarcastic heavy/joke thread because you can't be serious
