Do I even have a chance? Low GPA, Decent Test Scores

Hello, it's the summer and I'm already starting to write application essays and getting a bit nervous. Wanna help calm my nerves and give me a chance? Thanks in advance!

Cali/Male/Asian

1st generation to go to college in USA
born outside USA
One of the most competitive schools in Cali (1H, 1Y, 1P, 2S this year, 6-7 to each UC, 1UPenn, 1JHU, 1Cornell)
Top 10%

GPA: ~3.61 UW & ~4.045 W (10th-11th) Does Duke include 9th or 1st semes. of 12th?
SAT: Superscore 2180; 2100 (640CR, 720W, 740M), 2100 (600CR, 720W, 780M) ,retaking for 2250+

Wanting to apply Bio Engineering
I will most likely be applying ED but what are my chances with ED & without?

Thanks!

duke does include both freshman year and 1st semester of senior year - for ED applicants a midterm report is required for 1st sem senior year while RD applicants just send their end of semester report.

look... people will get in with stats worse than yours, and people will be rejected with nearly perfect stats. work hard on your application - write thoughtful and creative essays -and hope for the best.

gl

If you intend on retaking the SATs, repost this thread when you've got your actual score in hand.

Well firstly, factor in your GPA from Freshman year (and Senior year) and see if that makes your GPA go up or down significantly. Your GPA and rank should be fine and SATs are ok... but without strong ECs, I'd say you have a shot at ED, but RD is hard to say. The fact that you're Asian and from CA will also hurt you. I would recommend applying to Trinity unless your heart is set on engineering. I hear Pratt is harder to get into.

4.045 GPA Weighted...wow that sure is low.

i dono, i think GPA is very relative. it really depends on what kind of hs you attend. although i'm sure a 4.05 doesn't look stellar, its not horrible in the sense that its low only b/c u attend such a competitive hs. for example, my hs was a really dinky public school, so my gpa just seemed very inflated

More chances without ED. Apply regular.
Should get in!
Luck,

mediocre (for Duke) GPA, SATs, ECs
Are you a citizen? (if not, that could hurt you due to Duke not being need blind for Intls)

If you can bring in the SAT maybe, but I know 2350s with tons of leadership EC, top 3% or better who got WL or rejected. Duke requires A LOT nowadays. Heck, I’m lucky to have gotten in with my 2340/val. Next year will only be harder.

Expect WL or Reject. If you get in, it’ll be a wonderful surprise (don’t anticipate acceptance, it only leads to problems).

Oh! and the person above me has no clue what they’re talking about. ED would SIGNIFICANTLY increase your chances.

(ex: my guesses: chance of acceptance ED: 50%, RD: 20%)

aashima93: Stop posting on this board if you don’t know what you’re talking about. Your ignorance isn’t helping anyone.
