Do I even have a shot at any Ivies?

Well I’d be appyling ED next year because I’m only a junior. So what ‘stat’ do I need to get up??

well you certainly have a shot at Cornell if you are interested, last year our school had a kid get into there with a 3.6 weighted and 1900 so yeah…

For the OP: I think your strengths and weaknesses as an applicant are pretty clear:

 1. Strengths–very good writing awards, Dartmouth legacy
 2. Weaknesses–test scores, GPA good but not outstanding.

I think you can look at some very selective schools, but at the most selective, it would help if you could improve your SAT and SAT II scores. I would say applying ED to Dartmouth is worth trying, even if your scores stay the same. It’s not a sure thing at all, though. You need a list of schools with reaches (which can be Ivies), matches, and safeties. With your interest in writing, you might look at some schools with good writing programs–maybe Kenyon. I understand Carnegie Mellon has a good program, too.

I have looked at Kenyon and like it, but I don’t think I like the atmosphere of CMU. And thanks for your overall analysis

My daughter went to the summer writing program at Kenyon–if you’re a junior you might look at that for next summer, since you’ve already done U.Va. That would give you a good look at what Kenyon would be like (and small liberal arts colleges in general). My daughter thought it was a bit too remote, but a lot of people love it.

i’ve heard of that. i did go to the new england young writers conference at Middlebury and loved it there.

Ok, so since i last wrote this thread i have a few updates on whether these help my chances at Brown/Dartmouth/Middlebury/Northwestern or not.
My GPA is actually 3.87.
Also, i was just accepted into two more interships. One is an online magazine that I’d be writing for, and the other is a literary magazine for teens that i would be editing. Both i do around 3 hours a week.

Also, i won an art scholastic award and another writing award

Finally, does submitting an art portfolio only help you get into the studio art major?

hey, i’m really stessing out about colleges and SATs and crap and would really apprecaite more feedback…thanks!
