Do I even have a shot at Penn in Regular Decision?

I applied to Penn under the Regular Decision program and REALLY want to join the class of 2015. I have pretty much everything, in terms of numbers, within Penn's middle 50% range. I also participate in extensive community service, including hospital volunteering, and hold numerous leadership positions in and out of school. I have a legacy as well - my father is a graduate. I would just like to know, especially from current or admitted students, if I even have the slightest chance of getting in RD, seeing that the number of applicants has been through the roof everywhere this year. My scores are below. THANKS!!

ACT: 32
SAT: 2090
Class Rank: Top 7%
GPA on 4.0 scale: 3.90

National Merit Finalist
President of National Honor Society
Editor of School Paper
Homeroom Leader

Habitat for Humanity
Hospital Volunteer
Soup Kitchens
Charity Service
St. Vincent de Paul

your EC’s are incredible but your scores are kind of low for a school like Penn. However, you are a legacy and that will help considerably. I think you have a very good chance. Is the gpa you listed weighted or unweighted? Good luck. Hope you get in!

thanks and yeah my scores are low thats what i’m worried about. 3.9 GPA is unweighted

That’s a great gpa, especially unweighted. What part of the country are you from? I think you are in very good shape. relax!!

Metro Detroit

What school/ program are you applying to?

I applied to the College of Arts and Sciences/interested in the BBB major

Hmm, okay, I don’t know too much about admissions for the college of arts and sciences, I’ve been looking into Wharton and SEAS mostly. What is the BBB major, lol. =/

haha yeah the BBB is pretty cool actually and it’s unique to Penn. its Biological Basis of Behavior - so its like a mix of biology/anatomy/physiology etc. with psychology which for me is cool because i want to do pre-med

That seems really interesting! I like that it combines psychology with the more “physical science”. That seems perfect for an undergrad looking to go into medicine after attending med school. I’m looking at another program at Penn which is equally unique to the university. It’s called the Jerome Fisher Program In Management & Technology (M&T) for short. I’m looking at chemical engineering and economics as my two majors. I really love Penn though, I don’t really think there’s another university like it. I feel like they genuinely encourage students to cross disciplines, as evidenced by programs such as M&T and BBB.

yeah i definitely agree. it’s part of Penn’s “One University” thing for allowing students to explore outside of their actual school. it’s pretty awesome, i just hope i can get in!! good luck to you too!!

Unfortunately Legacy doesn’t help in the regular decision round at UPenn and with a low SAT score I would say that you will probably be rejected. However, with very good essays you will have a shot.

I hope you sent the ACTs instead of the SATs. I don’t know how competitve your major is, but if it’s not that competitive, I think you have a good shot.

thanks for responding and yeah i sent ACTs. I just took the SAT so I would become a Merit Finalist. unfortunately, neither of them is that great but at least my ACT is in Penn’s middle 50%

thanks for being honest eak325. seeing that my scores aren’t that high, i did spend a lot of time on my essays, and i think they are very unique so hopefully that helps

I think your scores are fine. Your ACT is pretty good. I think you have a good chance… It really does boil down to your essays.

Best of luck.

And to whoever talked about M and T, it’s a craaaazy hard program to get into. Harder than MIT, I’ve heard. They take 50 kids only.

Take a look at my thread too.

your sats are on the low side and not being top 5% in your class is not good either. this year will be the toughest year for penn admissions. i disagree with the weight that essays hold, teacher recommendations are much more important in my opinion.

well you still have a pretty good chance of making it… and your sat score is fine too… I mean its not too awesome but it can work :)

chance back
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1079059-chance-me-ambitious-applicant-2.html</a> ( and yeah I am trying to get in with a 2030 :stuck_out_tongue: )

Truthfully- it’s a huge reach. Why did you squander your legacy by not applying early?

thanks for your honesty schmohawk. looking back, i probably should’ve done early decision to penn. i applied early to duke instead and got rejected so probably wasn’t the best planning on my part
