Hi I'm a junior this year and I wonder if I have any chance at CMU. My grades are bad (only around top 16% -- our school doesn't do class ranking but it gives a histogram) although I do go to a competitive public high school and my grades this year are a lot better), my SAT's aren't very good either (only in 2100-2200 range). However I am sort of good at math (I qualified for USAMO twice and received many awards in competitions). Should I apply to CMU next year (do I have a decent shot at this school)?

Depending on what you're interested in studying and what your ECs are, it's probably a good idea to apply to CMU if you're interested in the school, but consider it a reach.

I disagree, you should definitely consider CMU because I consider myself pretty decent at math but I have never qualified for the USAMO but I got accepted to CMU ECE.
Definitely apply, and write good essays! Good luck

OMG a 2100+ SAT is so terrible. I don't even know how you live with yourself.

...I was like top 4% weighted, top 15% unweighted. So if you're top 16% unweighted, you're fine. USAMO is very impressive.

Why not try?

This year I got rejected from some universities, but accepted to some ranked higher than the ones I got rejected from. :P

One must realize that the admission process, no matter how much any admissions committee scrutinizes one's application, is flawed and very subjective. An applicant will never actually be able to 100% conceive to the reviewer exactly who they are. It's all a gamble, so why not give it a shot...

hey eastheretic, dont worry. apply anyways. i got in with mediocre stats. 3.7-3.8 weighted gpa and like 3.2 unweighted gpa and a 2000 SAT score. but then i came from a very tough private school.
the thing is cmu is known to accept ppl with mediocre stats but have good sat score(1300+ or 2000+) or really good extracurricular activities and essays.

apply to hss or mcs preferably cuz those are more doable. if u wanna go do engineering, it is not too hard to transfer.

apply! they let in a huge range of people. My friend had terrible stats, but good essays, and he got in and is doing fine in classes.

plus it's common app so nothing to lose really.
