Hi, I’m a soon-to-be senior and college application season is right around the corner. I intend on applying to a variety of schools including very competitive schools like Cornell and Chapel Hill as well as less competitive schools such as Florida State (where I’d pay in-state tuition). Cornell has been my dream school for a while, but I don’t know if I’m quite there yet (slacked off a lot early in high school), compared to some people I’ve met who’ve gotten into Cornell and other Ivies.
ACT score: 33 PSAT: 99th percentile English, 85th in mathematics (I’ve gotten a lot better in math since then)
Weighted GPA: 4.2 (still figuring out unweighted, probably around 3.3-3.4)
Extracurricular activities: Varsity Football, Interact Club member for three years (going into next year), next year I will be a leader for Rotary for the second year in a row, two years in Robotics (discontinued because it isn’t really going anymore), JV J ROTC Raider team, three years Student Executive Council (running for Class Secretary right now for fourth year), completed a leadership course, lots of volunteer hours, something else that I’m forgetting.
I speak four languages and am currently learning my fifth, I can juggle pretty well, and I’m a first generation American, if that helps at all.
You should find out what your class rank and UW GPA is…
A 3.3 is extremely non-competitive.
Thank you. That’s by far my biggest concern as of right now. One of the reason’s it’s so low is because I did awful (like D- awful) in an art class and in one semester of a core class (which I plan on retaking, second semester I’ve kept a very high grade with a new teacher) do you think with a high grade in the first semester on my retake and dropping the grade in art that it would help? That could bring my GPA up by quite a bit.
One A may not bring it up a whole lot, and a D on your transcript may be fatal. Is it possible to retake the art class? Whats your class rank?
I’m in the top 15 or 20% all though the only reason I’m not higher other than that fatal D is that there is massive cheating at my school. I could theoretically retake the class but my schedule for next year is full with AP classes and I’d just do miserably again. It wasn’t for lack of effort that I did poorly.
