Do I have a chance at Yale? Anyone accepted with lower than a 30?

Hey CC, well I have been very curious on college admissions and wanted to get opinions/answers!

Here is some of my hs information:
Activities:
~Student Council (vice-president)
~Academic Decathlon
~After School Matters Pre-Apprentice
~Freshman Connection Youth Leader
~Latin CLub
~Lastly, I have been invited to join NHS and the Hispanic National Society for my sophmore and junior year!! (:
GPA and Rank:
~4.78 unweighted (4.0 weighted)
~Rank: 1/437
Shool Type:
~Not a very good school. It has bad recognition and its been years since a student has been accepted to a top notch school. But not so long ago, a student went to UChicago.
ACT/SAT:
~Have no taken the tests and am freakikng out. I hope I do good! :/

+anyone recieve below a 2000 on sat or below a 30 on act and accepted to yale or any other ivy?
THANKS!!!

For the club invitations, I meant junior and senior year!!! Sorry!! (:

If you are hispanic and number 1 in your class, slight possibility.

Being hispanic can actually be a hook for an ivy? my sister’s vision is different. Its all about the test scores for her. lol.

It helps but you probably need to get to 32-33 to have a better chance.

I know, and that’s what freaks me out the most. I have taken out the princeton review act books and it makes the whole test seem easy… is it really that easy???
another question, according to those conversion charts, a 32-33 composite is like getting 3-5 wrong on each test!!! That seems pretty stressful!!! I think I really need to take a practice test ASAP to see where i stand…

What is your Hispanic country of origin? Are you disadvantaged, have you overcome obstacles? Are you first gen to college?

See the Hispanic Students forum (under College Admissions, Specialty Topics) for more information on college admissions for Hispanic applicants.

Well my country of origin is Mexico. However, I know that there are several def. of first generation. My parents did not attend college or finish high school, but I have siblings who are curently in college and will graduate soon. Does that still make me first generation?

It has happened, but those people probably had something else really going for them. Aim higher if you want a good shot. And yeah, you’re first generation. Your siblings are part of that first generation.

You’re right nne718. Are you in/going (to) Yale?

Yeah I’ll be there this fall.

OP - There are lots of great colleges out there. Remember that that only about 10% of applicants get into Ivies, even if they have perfect scores and top notch academic prep. In other words, it’s a crap shoot for all. So a good plan for you (and all students aspiring to a particular Ivy) would be to pursue a variety of college, including “reaches”. Any “reach” acceptance can be treated as a pleasant surprise.

Are you headed into senior year? Did you happen to take PSAT in junior year?

colorado_mom, I want to take the PSAT, but I don’t know if we take it in my school. It sucks, but I guess there are other ways to take it. Although I am very skeptical about being accepted into an ivy, I might just give it a shot. I am really hoping for Yale or Columbia, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

nne718, what were your credentials when applying to Yale? It would really help me! (:

BTW, I’m a rising junior.

Check my stats profile. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/profiles/member_stat_view.html?user_id=382570

WOW!! nne718, awesome scores. Do you think I need sports to get in?

You definitely don’t need sports. Just do the ECs you enjoy and try to excel at them.

Alrighty then, nne718. Sports was the only thing that worried me, but I guess I should stop over analyzing things. (: Quick question, my friend got a 30-31 (not sure) on the act, is #1 in class, but has no ec’s. does she have any chance at the ivies?? (BTW, we are not in the same class, she’s older. Lol.)

I was in the same situation as you last year! I’m hispanic as well and my school doesn’t send anyone to schools above UCLA, but I’ll be attending Yale this fall. I had a 29 ACT composite and an SAT score just above 2000, very similar ECs. Just make sure you write a really awesome essay that lets the school know who you are! The admissions director from my region wrote me a letter saying that my essays made all the difference.

cogitoergodoleo, I am actually very glad to hear that. I am really scared I might not do well on the ACT or SAT, but you are one of the very few who show that ivies don’t just care about scores. I just hope i rock my essays!! (: THANKS!!
