Do i have a chance for most UCs with a 3.8 gpa?

My major is history my first choice is UCLA which i have read average history gpa is about a 3.7 or so. Ive been meeting with a UCLA rep at my ccc and he thinks Im a "good candidate". However I feel like he tells everyone this? Anyway other UCs I am interested in are UCSD UCSB UCR UCD, and UCB(i know its a long shot). I am also thinking of tagging with UCD, and applying to 2 CSU(Long Beach and another). My GPA at the moment is a 3.83 and I only need 3 more classes, so I dont think it should change much. I am completing every course required for all of these schools, much of them overlap so it wasnt to hard to cover them all. Im just nervous because in total my first semester I got a B, and my last semester I got a C in a bio class. I had one W from non transferable class, so I am hoping it wont effect me too badly. I really need help figuring out which schools to apply to, my school counselors are not much help. I have met with 7 different ones, and non gave me the information I needed. Most told me to just apply to CSU LA, and DH since there easier to get into. Should I apply to a good amount of UCs? Do i have a chance?

You have a good enough GPA to get into a UC. I don’t know why they’re telling you to apply to certain CSUs. I know you can get into UCR and UCD. I think UCLA and UCSD would be the harder ones? If you have a couple of EC’s and good recommendations (I’m not sure if they ask for them or not), then apply there too. Also check to see which UC and CSU majors are impacted. It’ll help if you apply to a major that isn’t impacted. That way you’ll have a better chance of being accepted.

With your current stats you should be fine for the most of the UC’s. For UCLA and UC Berkeley if you have strong extracurriculars and a strong personal statement then you’re likely to be admitted because your GPA is right around or above the recent average to those schools and/or your major. For UCLA the average admitted GPA for pre-history majors was 3.74 in 2012. Berkeley doesn’t release major specific stats, but their average admitted GPA for last year’s class was 3.77. The other UC’s are less competitive, so I’d say your chances look pretty good.

If you maintain your current performance, you’re essentially guaranteed to get into one of the UC’s and very likely to get into most, if not all of them. My personal opinion is that you don’t need to apply to any of the CSU’s because you’re going to get into a UC barring you don’t really mess up next year. Maybe it’s worth applying to one as a back up, but if you don’t want to go there I don’t see the point in applying given that most people even with a 3.1-3.2 GPA get into one of and a lot of times multiple UC’s.

And fyi, the UC’s don’t care about Ws and non-transferable coursework isn’t ever going to be evaluated because it’s exactly that – not transferable to a UC. If you get an A or an F/W/Incomplete in a non-transferable class it doesn’t factor into your application.

^ To add to this, I got into UCSC and UCR with a 3.01 (at the time I applied). I was also a Biology major, which is impacted.
