I know this may be preemptive but I am now entering my junior year of high school and my goal since beginning was to be Val or Sal. But unfortunately I made one B for the first time ever. It was an 85 in an honors course.

However I have high As and I took 4 honors courses this year and 2 APs (the max offered in 10th).Our school calculates it based off numeric GPA. Will this in effect end my hopes or do I have a small chance if I am careful? Next year I have 3 APs. 1 honors and one foreign language, one elective and one required non honors class. My school however is very competitive.

Only if everyone else does worse than you…

If your school is competitive then there should be multiple people that will have never received a B by graduation. So, yeah I wouldn’t be prepping a graduation speech if I were you.

The valedictorian and salutatorian didn’t even give speeches at my school. They just voted on some random kids to give speeches.

At my school it goes:
Val
Sal
Class Pres
Student Council Pres
Principal’s choice

Sorry I know this is a little random but I took two APs this year and next year I am taking 3. The max I could take is 4 but I didn’t want to over work myself.

Is 3 APs enough to get into a good college by junior year? I have three non honors required classes and one honors class. Next year I plan to take 4 or 5.

If there is a limit to how many you can take per year, and you take one less than the limit, colleges will still consider that a very rigorous curriculum in relation to what was offered. The problem with CC is that there are kids from gigantic schools with 20 APs and no limit on how many they can take. A lot of schools don’t have that, so you can’t compare yourself to them and what they have. In the context of your school, are a lot of kids taking the maximum? Colleges will look at that.

Some kids are taking 4 but for the most part most are taking 3. The only reason they have an extra one is because they finished their foreign language.

You need to talk to your guidance counselor about this. How on earth would we know? If there are 10 kids who took similar or higher weighted courses than you did and did not get ANY A’s, I would say your chances are slim. Though of course, they could tank in a course–kids do get that senioritus bug that last year and if you stay solid, you could be fine. But your counselor or other school employee who deals with this are the only ones that can specifically address this issue.

My kids just graduated, and the Val had a 4.61 and the Sal a 4.60; I’m sure neither had ever had a B, and I think the difference was that the Val probably took one more honors course than the Sal. The school only gives A, B, C, D or F, with no pluses or minuses, an extra .5 for honors, an extra 1.0 for AP.

OP, there is nothing you can do now but do your best. Get all A’s, and maybe it will work out. Maybe not, but you just never know and you’ll still have an excellent GPA.
