Do I have a chance of getting into Vanderbilt

Hi,
I have a 3.38 unw and 4.79 w GPA, a 780 math SAT and 740 English which I will hopefully improve in November. I want to apply ED2 to Vanderbilt and was wondering because the have holistic review processes if I have a chance of getting in. Another girl at my school got in with slightly lower GPAs. I just love Vanderbilt so much and I know I will be crushed if I dont get in. when replying, please be harsh if you have to. I want honest advice. Thank you guys so much

My guess is that the other student who got in with a lower GPA was hooked… a child of an alumni (possibly a donor), a recruited athlete, a URM, or had some rare talent or quality.

I think you should take your shot, but, without a hook, your GPA just isn’t competitive. Just make sure you also apply to some safeties and match schools.

Thank you…You might be right there, Many of the students in my High School have parents that have attended ivies (I don’t personally know if anyone has attended Vanderbilt - I would guess not because it isn’t a very “popular” school in my area, but your answer seems to make the most sense).

@nesmess27 There is a pretty large disparity between your SAT’s and your UW GPA, which is rather uncommon. Is there some reason for that like you bombed a couple courses or are your grades pretty consistent across the board?

I have As and Bs for final grades, and my weighted is ok, but I have struggled a bit in math. My updated SAT score now is a 1560

I applied ED1—rejected. Good luck to you though. I will admit, I was crushed when I didn’t get in. You shouldn’t go off of someone getting in because they had a lower GPA than you or you had better stats than them overall. Unfortunately, that is not how the holistic admissions process works. They work off of “why should we admit someone” vs “why we shouldn’t admit someone”. It is unknown, really, what they are looking for. If you end up having more tallies on “Why we should admit someone” than the other 12 or so applicants that are similar to you with either slightly better or worse stats than you, then congrats.

Everyone has a chance at getting into Vandy, but not everyone is accepted. Simply put, there are just too many qualified applicants for such few spots. Make sure you have a good list of other schools you may want to attend if it does not work out for you.

gosh, thank you so much and I am so sorry that you didn’t get in. Boy do I wish I had the stats. Applause to the teens that can somehow go through school and personal conflicts, and still manage to keep their grades up. Really, I don’t know how they do it, but I’m so proud of my friends that managed it. I couldn’t apply ED although I wanted to - my parents weren’t willing to pay full price for a school so far away from NJ. I really hope you get in if they carry the application to the regular decision pool. I’ll start preparing for a rejection lol. I do have a decent list of schools but to e its either Vandy or Whatever else - Vandy was the one school i LOVED. Thanks for taking the time to reply and maybe you could transfer in (you must adore the school if you applied ED1). Anyways, good luck to you for all your apps  <3

Awww, you’re so sweet! Unfortunately, I was not deferred. Vandy does defer applicants, but that is very rare for them to do so. I definitely love Vanderbilt and all things Vandy, so that was a bummer for me when I checked my portal and didn’t get in.

Vanderbilt is 100% needs met, meaning that when you fill out the FAFSA and CSS profile, they will calculate the number that you will have to pay, and they will pay the other part of the tuition. So, realistically, unless your parents make an outrageous amount of money, you would not have to pay full price.

Same goes to you! Good luck with all your apps and future endeavors! :))

Unfortunately, since none of us are affiliated with Vanderbilt Admissions, none of us can predict with certainty what your admissions result will be. I’d recommend talking to your HS counselor, as they have the most information about prior students’ applications who were accepted to Vanderbilt and similar schools, and will be able to provide information on how your application compares to theirs.

I already asked…they won’t tell me anything other than “if you love it apply! 2020 has been a weird year so nobody knows!”

Did you get in with a 1560?
