I was recently accepted into my dream school, but my hopes of going there seem to be slipping away. They offered me nothing concerning financial aid, and I am wondering if I even have a chance of receiving any money on an appeal.

My family makes 200,000+ a year (a lot, I know), but in the last six years they have paid for nine years worth of college for my older brother and sister. There isn't really a way my family can afford to pay $55,000 a year for me on school.

No other colleges have offered me any need based financial aid except for a $3,000 need based scholarship from one school.

So, do you think I have a shot at receiving money from my dream school?

Thanks in advance.

I doubt think you will receive need based aid based on your family income. Your family’s past expenses will not really be a factor.

What can your parents pay and do you have an affordable school that you have been accepted to?

Have you discussed the cost of attending college with your parents?

Since your parents have had kids go to college already, they’ve known that they were expected to pay, so why would things be different now?

It doesn’t sound that you’ve applied to any financial safety schools. If that’s true, that may be a problem.

How much WILL your parents pay each year? What are they saying?

Are you instate for Calif? Did you get accepted to any CSUs or UCs? Those would be much cheaper for you.

That’s what I figured.

I am from CA and have been accepted into UCs so that of course is an option. The price of a UC is the price my parents are willing to pay for any school.

Luckily I do have many schools that have offered me merit scholarships, giving me some affordable options. None of them are my “dream” school, but still great schools.

Thank you everyone for your input.

Glad you applied to a broad range of schools. Good planning.

One thing about “dreams”…something is always waking you up. ;)

Seriously, what did you like about your dream school?

What are the UCs? What are the merit schools? how much is the merit?

BTW…is Brandeis your dream school? If so, that seems odd since in another thread you say that you’ve never visited the school. Often those dreams don’t last.

You’re right, I should have never formed an emotional connection with a school (Brandeis) that I’ve never visited. That being said, I am slowly realizing almost every school that I applied to could be the right school for me.

I was accepted into UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz (applied to Berkeley also but rejected). Cal Poly SLO is another school I was accepted to.

I received $20,000 merit scholarships from Mount Holyoke, Willamette, and Mills. From Lewis and Clark I received $14,000 and $10,000 from University of the Pacific.

I’m starting to visit schools now, so hopefully I’ll figure out which school is for me.
