I posted a thread before asking people to chance me for NYU CAS, but recently I became interested in the Media Communications program. I want to have a major at CAS too but I have to get into the Steinhardt school in order to easily declare the double major at CAS.

So I am a freshman at Baruch College with an undeclared major. I am currently taking the typical liberal arts courses (Writing I, Calculus, Sociology, Theatre, American History), will take a course during the winter, and five more during spring (Intro to Business, Writing II, Political Science, Psychology, Communications).

I graduated from Frank Sinatra School of the Arts this June with a 93 average, ranked 12/161, and as a member of the National Honor Society with a NYS Comptroller Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership in the Community. I took music and academic classes with 4 AP classes. I played the violin in the school orchestra (which won a NYSSMA Gold Medal Level VI for playing Beethoven's 5th Symphony), part of the orchestra committee, one of the editors for the school magazine, debate team, and 300 hours of community service. I screwed up on the tests though. I got a 25 for the ACT, 600 for SAT Subject Test- Math Level I, and 540 for the Literature one.

At Baruch, I am a Class Representative of the Undergraduate Student Government, President and Founder of a Club, member of the Finance & Economics Society, and will be a Peer Mentor later on. In addition, I have a part time job at the 92nd Street Y during the weekends.

If my GPA first semester will be a 3.7, will I have a chance to get into the Media program at Steinhardt?

I transferred from another CUNY with (honestly) less impressive HS stats and I got into Steinhardt MCC. I had a pretty strong college record, though. Just write really good essays and get GOOD recommendations. Steinhardt is all about FIT. You are a really strong candidate EXCEPT. . .

for the standardized test scores. I feel like the rest of your application is really strong, but those scores definitely sort of make one stop.

When were you thinking of transferring? The more credits you come to NYU with, the less your HS scores matter.

I am thinking about applying as a transfer this year for fall 2010. What CUNY school did you come from and what was your GPA? I still feel that a 3.7 will not be good enough. And will I have a better shot if I will apply for Spring 2011? Thanks

Okay I think I know which CUNY you’re talking about but I won’t say anything lol. Applying for Spring 2011 is actually a good idea but the only problem I have about that is finishing in four years. I want to double major in Economics as well so do you think it is possible to finish by May 2013? or eveN August 2013?

Another reason I want to apply right now is because I really do not like waiting. NYU has been my dream school since I was like in the 4th grade. But I guess I’ll be saving a lot of money though.

I am still going to attempt to apply for next year. I know I will have good recommendations from my professors because I always participate and they see that I am a hard worker. I actually show more enthusiasm in class than a lot of other students. Do you know what essays they will expect us to write for them?

Do you really want to double major? A minor is totally doable in four years. MCC has A LOT of required classes. Four cores, six “fields of study”, three or four specialization classes, and that’s not including the liberal arts core.

I suggest doing ALL of your liberal arts at CUNY, don’t take any comm classes there, because MCC is a pain in the butt when it comes to taking media credits from OTHER schools.

Yeah I’m taking a comm class next semester and possibly another one during the summer. Yes, I really want to double major in Economics. As a matter of fact, I want to go to business school after a few years of working after undergrad. But, I want to first work in media, at a production company, or a talent agency in LA. I know that I can still go to a business school with a media communications major and an Economics minor. I mean, I would rather get a degree in Media Communications with an Economics minor from NYU rather than a BBA from Baruch because an NYU degree IS STILL an NYU degree no matter the major (unless it’s something pointless like fundraising).

I know that there are some liberal arts and unrestricted electives that a media communications major has to take. Is it possible to take the Economics courses I need and also use them for the elective credits that are necessary for steinhardt?

I don’t think you can “double count” them for the Econ major and the Steinhardt electives that fulfill the Steinhardt major, but don’t quote me on that. Your best shot is to call the department as you get closer to applying and ask them.

Thank you for all your help. Instead of taking Communications, I decided to take Intro to Acting next semester with an excellent professor.

Another question. I sorta have an opportunity to intern for a big fashion company. Would interning for a huge fashion company improve my chances to get into Steinhardt?
Thanks again

woah…i should be studying cuz i have the sat’s tomorrow but i also applied for ED so this might all be a waste of time to study. anyways lol okay so i have scores just like you (or him) and i was thinkin if i didnt get in, i would transfer from a cc since i REALLY want to go to NYU but i already have 30 units as a high school kid cuz ive taken classes…soo i have a few questions…

how long would i have to go to cc for?

is it really as hard as ppl say to “fit in” as a transfer or make friends or whatever? cuz if it is, then i dont want to do that. obviously.

I’m no expert at this transferring thing but I would say it’s normally 2 years at cc. It’s much cheaper and easier to finish your Associates at a cc and then do the major classes at NYU. YOu save tons of money. Plus, at LaGuardia Cc, they have this thing where you might get a $20,000 scholarship to NYU after two excellent years at Laguardia. I suggest you look into it.

I did transfer high schools and started at Frank Sinatra during my sophomore year. Transferring is hard regardless. Of course it’ll be much harder to make friends, especially in college. But, you’ll make friends soon enough and I would say that if you get into a good school like NYU, go and don’t let the whole “hard to make friends” stop you. Sure, it will be harder, but it’s NYU.
