I’ve been considering applying to Harvard, and maybe Dartmouth/Yale too for Fall 2005 undergraduate.

I live in a rural community of Canada, in the province of Nova Scotia. I figure I did well on the math portion of the SAT I (like 750 or so I hope), but the verbal was my downfall I may only get 500 or so, maybe 600. The low verbal score is not really my fault. I had 100% unweighted in my Advanced English, which was the highest possible course and grade for my junior year. This shows a flaw in the curriculum (or lack there of) for last year. Hopefully the Admissions Officers will be able to pick up on that, and not dock me for it.

Here’s some of my stats:
GPA: 97.0% end of last term (junior year grade 11)
Rank: 1 of ~70 at the end of junior year
Course Selection: Most rigorous available (AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP English, AP Biology, and Global Geography [compulsory])

Extracurriculars: -Senior Executive Student Council (Recording Secretary)
-Senior School Newspaper Reporter (2 years)
-Curling for a school team, and a personal team (3 years)
-Call to Remembrance in freshman year and in junior high
-Will be playing Softball in the spring
-Have been golfing for 6 years
-Ice Hockey for a personal team in freshman year and in junior high
-Reach for Dalhousie Program (it’s like Jeopardy!)

Volunteering: -Will be volunteering about one hour a week to help kids learn to curl.
-Will be tutoring be the end of the year.

Other: -Attended the 2004 Dalhousie University Science and Engineering week (invitational event, one student per school from my province)
-Part time job for Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods (Potato Chips and Corn Snacks) around 10 hours per week

So do I have a chance?

u stand a decent shot. U got like no more than 50%..the only thing is u dont have too many HUGE ec's, u need more of those. Someting that sets u apart. There will be many ppl like u applying, so find something that is really unique about u! gl

Hm... Yeah. The EC's are a little scattered, and you don't show too much leadership(unless you're leaving out some positions...) And a lot of it was only from grades 7-9. Maybe you need to elaborate a little more in your descriptions.

The job, do you need it to help with family, or is it just a pocket money thing? Because if your family needs the money, that could be huge for your app.

Your academics are solid, but...no SAT score at all yet, huh? That troubles me a bit if your applying for C/O 2005... Are you signed up for November? I hope you are, because you should take November, and then see how you do there and retake December...

Anyway, good luck! Are you doing EA, by any chance? I am, and late postmark date is November 1... Geez, the deadline is coming so fast!

I get my SAT I scores back on October 22nd.

I have no idea about your chances... I just wanted to say I think it's awesome that you're on the curling team. If you write a funny essay about that, send it to me; I'd love to read it.

I seriously don't understand how some people can put down like a dozen extracurriculars. I mean how many hours a week are these things? Once every two weeks?

ECs are so stupid. People sign up for things to do no work, and get credit for them. I am quite involved in what I do. My ECs take up at least a few hours a week each. Plus I have a job. Plus I have the most rigorous course selection. I don't really have too much extra time to have more ECs, not to mention there aren't very many more at my school. My school only has like 450 people in it, grade 7 to 12.

This whole Ivy league thing seems farfetched. There's something about it I don't like, and I don't know why yet.

Yeah...I didn't mean to offend you or anything with my comment, I'm just saying. If your school is that small, I imagine it'll work in your favor during admissions.(Rural points or something, right?) And, yeah, ECs are usually blatant attempts at pleasing adcoms, but, hey, what can ya do, right? Just make it a point to show the adcom that you are committed and passionate about your ECs, because you clearly are...

Sorry for the run-on's, heh... Just finished a non-stop imagery write-up's session for AP Lit.

And, the Ivy League... It's the MACHINE, maaaaynnnnnn!
