Let me preface this by saying that I am absolutely in love with Washington & Lee. Like all schools, it has its flaws, but as cliche as it sounds, I really felt at home when I visited Lexington, and I could definitely see myself spending 4+ years there. I am a nonmatched Questbridge finalist applying EDII.

That said, I've read that W&L looks heavily at class rank, and mine is abysmal. I'm approximately 65 out of 450, and that is reflected in my GPA - 4.1 weighted, 3.1 unweighted. All other parts of my application are, in my opinion, quite solid.

I could have asked this in the 'chance' forum, but I figured that I would come here first - most of you, after all, know quite a bit about the school and have a better idea of what they want. Do you think that I still have a shot?

Your GPA/class rank makes W&L a high reach, unless you are at taking a very rigorous program at a very rigorous high school known to W&L (and even then, it’s still a reach). However, as a Questbridge finalist and if your EC’s, recs, & scores are indeed solid, it’s not impossible. I’d prepare for your application to be wait listed and reconsidered in the RD round. Good luck!

Thank you! That’s terrifying, I’ll admit, but I appreciate the response.
On the bright side, I did find out yesterday that my ranking has improved by nearly ten! I’m not quite sure how it happened, but I’m certainly not complaining.

Charoulotte – You only apply to college once, and if there is a school that you really like, you should apply. College admissions is very unpredictable. There is very little cost in applying (really just your time and the application fee, which you might even be able to get waived). If you really want to go to W&L (or any other school for that matter), make sure your application is as best you can make it, and make sure to show a LOT of demonstrated interest. Furthermore, if W&L is your #1 choice, let the admissions office know. Part of their job is to increase the yield of the incoming class. If they know W&L is your first choice, that should help you out. Also, don’t stress out about it. It will all work out in the end. Good luck!
