Hi!
I live in NC as well and when I visited Duke I picked up a flyer specifically for NC and SC applicants. The good news is, you have a slight edge to get into Duke (12-14% vs 9% for RD, I believe). The bad news is, that is still a very low number.
You are certainly academically qualified, and your ECs may be low in quantity but appear to be high in quality. Write a killer essay, get some great recs, pass the interview and hit submit-- you have as good a shot as anybody.
Unfortunately, though, at any university as competitive as Duke, having as good a shot as anybody is no guarantee. This does not mean you should not apply, it simply means that you should be realistic about your chances, hopeful about the outcome, and assured in knowing that you will thrive at any institution you attend. Duke is great, but it is certainly not the pinnacle of higher education, and you can be happy wherever you go.
Good luck, worry less, and hope to see you next year as a blue devil!
@BB1313 “Duke is great, but it is certainly not the pinnacle of higher education, and you can be happy wherever you go.”
Who do you think you are saying this? What makes it NOT the pinnacle of higher education? if you’re going to make the argument that the OP can get a fantastic education at other places, don’t do it at the expense of the school you’re vying to get into. It makes you look low.
Duke hasn’t released the middle 50% range for the new SAT yet. However if you do the conversion on the collegeboard website, a 1470 on the new SAT converts to 2110. This would put you at about the 30th percentile for Trinity and 10th percentile for Pratt.
It is true that SC and NC residents have a slightly easier time getting in. Traditionally about 12% of the class has been made up of kids from the Carolinas.
So if I were you, I would work on increasing the SAT scores some more. Home schooled students are held to a higher scrutiny than others when it comes to grades.
I feel like I could better answer your original question if I knew what your academic focus is, or if you have any hooks. SAT score looks fine as long as you’re not going into engineering. GPA and Rank is perfect.
