Hi all, I'm currently active duty in the military. My contract will be up next august and I plan to transfer to a university for fall of 2012. These are my stats:

Hispanic male
Want to major in: Computer Engineering
Current school: Ventura College in CA
HS GPA: 2.7 (horrible I know)
Current GPA: 3.68 (should go up to 3.79 hopefully by end of this semester)

SAT/ACT scores: CR-640, Math-600, Writing-590, total 1830 (I just retook them this year, but I think I can do better and might end up retaking them again)
Hooks: US Navy active duty, 1st generation hispanic, 1st person in my family to go to college

Courses: College Composition, Elementary Algebra, Introduction to Guitar, Principles of Macroeconomics, Intro to Computer Network Tech, Intro to Oral Communication (currently taking: General Chemistry I, Precalculus)

Another thing to consider is I have currently completed 19 credit hours and I'll have 29 credits by the end of this year.

Alot of these schools have calc 1 and 2 as a requirement, I guarantee these courses will be done by the end of summer 2012

These are the schools I'm interested in applying to:
UT-Austin
UI- Urbana Champaign
Texas A&M
Purdue University
University of Southern California
University of Wisconsin- Madison
UMass- Amherst
Ohio State University (Safety school I guess)
Rose-Hulman Insitute (I hear its really good and its free to apply so why not?)

So what do you think my chances are? I know the essays carry alot of weight too, so i'll definitely be working hard on them. I'm hoping maybe my military background might give me and edge but who knows :/ Thanks in advance guys. I'm hoping to come back into the military as an officer after getting my bachelors.

In general, even if you’re active duty, your GPA seems really low for a lot of these schools. I don’t know of any specific programs for active duty members of the military but in general:

UT-Austin - Not in
UI- Urbana Champaign - Probably not
Texas A&M - Probably in
Purdue University - Probably in
University of Southern California - Not in
University of Wisconsin- Madison - Not in
UMass- Amherst - Probably in
Ohio State University (Safety school I guess) - In
Rose-Hulman Insitute - Not in

You are greatly overestimating your chances even with your hooks - you need more matches and safeties.

Please chance me back!

hey thanks for your input, I already chanced yours. I actually wont be applying until january hopefully by then I’ll have a 3.79-3.8. Anyone else?

bump, any one else willing to chance me?

Your HS GPA means very, very little as an active duty military member with significant college credit. Given your decent CC GPA, I would put your chances at:

UT-Austin - in
UI- Urbana Champaign - in
Texas A&M - in
Purdue University - Probably in
University of Southern California - maybe
University of Wisconsin- Madison - probably in
UMass- Amherst - in
Ohio State University (Safety school I guess) - In
Rose-Hulman Insitute - maybe

If you get your SAT scores up a bit (say 2150+) and have an interesting story to tell about your life in the service, you may be able to aim a bit higher then this (read: Columbia GS)

hey thanks alot for your input, yea I’m definitely gonna retake my SATs this year. Are you military/former military? Your username makes me think so lol. Wow, I’ll guess I’ll have to reconsider applying to some of the ivies if I’m able to get my SATs up.
