Hooks: Dual Citizen, Legacy

I know my GPA sucks, but my ECs are interesting, I am legacy, and my SAT scores are good. What do you think?

While your GPA may not be “stellar,” it does show an upward trend which is good. You do sound like you have interesting EC’s and legacy (is it one of your parents?) will help.

Visit the school, perhaps more than once if you can afford it, make contact with your counselor if you can, continue the upward trend in GPA particularly by taking the most advanced and toughest courses available at your school. You’ve got some good EC’s and legacy status could push you over the top. Good luck!

Admission could be difficult because of your GPA, although I also agree that there has been a significant upward trend. I would check with the school to even see if they look at freshman grades. There are many schools that don’t count your freshman year when looking at the GPA. I agree with the other posters that you have some very unique extracurricular activities.

My mother went there 30 years back. I would say my GPA is less than stellar because I have been bored by my classes. I love intellectual stimulation, dont get me wrong, but I am better at expressing that in my EC’s (which I love) than classes.

maxwell,
Unfortunately, colleges want to see that you are capable of handling college level work in balance with your EC commitments and they will look at that GPA. How will you explain the low GPA to Swat? Will you tell them you are bored with your classes? What do you think the Admissions Office will think? That if you find a class boring at Swat that you won’t try to do your best work? There are plenty of students applying to Swarthmore who are totally bored by unchallenging high school classes, BUT, they keep up their GPA’s. I’m not saying that your GPA is a “deal breaker” for you, just that your “excuse” for your less than stellar GPA will probably elicit a

Good point. I appreciate it.

maxwell,
I didn’t mean to sound so harsh. The good thing about your GPA is the strong upward trend. Finish this year strong and keep working hard during your senior year! Best of luck!
