hey guys , so , I’m in the 2nd/3rd year in highschool , I fight karate since I was like , 8 years old , i’m black belt in it and give community lessons every saturday for three years , i still havent done an official sat , but on the tests prepare I do pretty well , i belive i can easily take 1500/1600 , I directed a play in highschool and have done 3 short films , I cant say if they are any good but they do pass strong social messages , but… my GPA is horrible , about 2.6 right now , i just cant deal with the educational system , I think it’s too ridiculos , but the bad thing is that i need it to go foward … and thats pretty frustanting , i wish i could not go to college and go straigh be on set , serving coffes or whatever , but the problem is that brazilian film market is still to small , i came to theconclusion that college is really the best choice , and i want to have an international experience , so … do I have any chance of getting into nyu film school ?
your GPA is really too low for either of these schools. The acceptance rate for international students is even lower than the already-low acceptance rates for NYU and USC.
Of course, if you have a mind-blowingly exceptional portfolio, it may save your application since portfolios and autitions for film/art/theatre/dance programs are really just as, if not more, important than GPA and test scores.
How do you know you will get 1500/1600? Have you taken enough practice tests to be absolutely certain you will score high?
Also, since you are an international student, if finances are an issue, NYU will not be a possibility. I’m not sure about USC but NYU is notoriously bad with financial aid, especially with international students. With travel expenses from home to NYC, tuition and living expenses, etc, the cost of attendance for international students would be over $80,000 a year.
“i belive i can easily take 1500/1600”
Just like koreanstudent said, you seem to be overconfident about your SAT score. Please note that a lot of students with perfect GPA and who have been tutored for years still have trouble getting past 1500/1600. SAT is completely different from normal “school” tests that you can get perfect score on after days of studying, so I recommend taking a diagnostic test first and get the gist of it.
“my GPA is horrible , about 2.6 right now”
Not sure if you are sophomore or junior from the way you typed, but if you are currently a sophomore (10th grade), then you might stand chance to raise your grade. However, if you are a junior (11th grade), then, unfortunately, you will have to just bank on your non-academic background mostly.
Also, again, as koreanstudent said, both New York University and University of Southern California are prestigious, top schools with low acceptance rates (about 31% and 16.5%, respectively). I doubt they will accept you when there are tons of applicants who get rejected despite with solid GPA and SAT scores.
My primary question is, why do you want to go to NYU or USC? I’m sure you can find many other schools that are matching with your credentials and that you might like better. Do not be discouraged or give up your pursuit; just try to find more schools.
