Do I have any chance of getting in to Brown/Tufts/Amherst/Chicago, etc.?

Hi, so I am a junior in high school and I’m not gonna lie, sophomore year I didn’t do too hot. I got 3 Bs (2 in elective classes, 1 in math) which lowered my unweighted GPA to a 3.6 (4.4 weighted but that’s going up this year). Throughout high school I’ve taken AICE classes (basically like ap) and done well in them, and this year I’m taking 4 AICE classes and 4 Dual Enrollment classes with UF. I’m basically on track to getting all As, except I’m certainly going to get a B in Dual Enrollment Macroeconomics (a college sophomore level course). I have unique extracurriculars (nothing on a huge scale like national achievements, but definitely eye catching) and I consistently test 34-35 on act practice exams and am a good essay writer. I also plan on applying ED to Brown and I have a legacy at Tufts. So the question is, will my course load and grades this year help make up for last year? And will the B in macro kill me?

I don’t think a B in a class like that is a dealbreaker. I don’t know how colleges view dual enrollments in terms of rigor, though. Without stellar EC’s, your odds of getting into Brown are low- like anyone’s are. Tufts is not that much easier but I suspect if you can make your personality show and seem like a fit, it’s an easier path. You might consider changing to Tufts for your ED.

Thanks. So even if if I managed to get my GPA up to a 3.7-3.75 uw and a 4.6 w, you would still advise me to skip the ED for Brown? I ask because Brown is certainly my top choice by a mile, but I also don’t want to miss out on another opportunity by going after a pipe dream.

Also: sorry, I’m new here, but what constitutes “stellar” EC’s?

Thanks!

As a legacy at Tufts, you would likely benefit a lot more from ED than your would from Brown. So, Tuft’s 30% or so ED admission rate would likely be correct for you. On the other hand, Brown’s ED rate is lower for you than their reported acceptance rate, especially if your UW GPA is even 3.75.

My recommendation: push your GPA up to 3.75, and apply ED to Tufts. The rest of the list are very high reaches at 3.6 OR 3.75.

Disappointing but helpful. Thanks
