Hey guys, Im an international student from Peru and I want to study in the USA next year. My GPA is not so high, its around 2.6-2.8, my highschool was not so easy and it is the best in my country. I want to do well in the SAT to compensate my SAT. To be honest, I dont really know if I have much of a chance but Im going to try my hardest and see how it goes.

I did a official practice test from College Board and got a 1610. I know I can do much better because I took my time in some questions and omitted some because of lack of time. I followed the time limits.

I can take the SAT in october and december. I think im going to get around 1600-1700 if I take it in october, but I dunno if its worth it. I heard some colleges round up both SATs so if they do so Id rather just take it in december when Im more prepared. I think that if I take it in december I could get around a 1800 or more.

What do you guys think?
Do I even have any chances with that GPA? Im not sure if Im wasting time here, even though its not a waste because Im improving my english and maths :)

And to give you guys an idea of the colleges that im applying, for example they are East Carolina University, Western Michigan University, Colorado State University, Central Florida University, University of Colorado at Boulder.

have you considered going to CC (community college) for 2 years and then transferring to a better university ? if you want to graduate from a good school, this is probably your best option. CC will probably also be cheaper than a regular university.

If you haven’t already done so, make an appointment with the EducationUSA counselors at the advising center closest to you. There are several in Peru. [EducationUSA - Find an Advising Center](http://www.educationusa.info/Peru) They can help you determine which colleges and universities in the US are most likely to admit you, and they can help you with the whole process.

Yep I already had an appointment with them but they want me to take the SAT and TOEFL and see how I do first before looking more deeply into my preferred universities because they say all universities evaluate applications differently and they are not sure if my GPA might be a problem, they just told me to study well for the SAT/TOEFL. Thats why Im asking you guys about your opinions :P

Well, if your school’s the best in your country, it probably has a rigorous curriculum. If so, I think your school has it’s own way of calculating GPA. Even if it doesn’t, report your class rank to the universities and find a way to explain your situation.

The EducationUSA people really do know their stuff. If they want an ACT/SAT score and a TOEFL score before meeting with you, they probably have good reasons. If you don’t have time to get an official score before your meeting, take copies of the practice exams that you have done so you have an estimate of what your scores will be. If they have strong contacts at any of the colleges/universities on your list, they should be able to tell you what you will need to do to improve your chances of admission at that specific place.
