Hey everyone,
I was just wondering if I had to play a varsity sport to get into USNA. I am pretty good at baseball (been on several travel teams), but our school has around 300 kids that try out for baseball and politics come into play at our school. So my question is, if i don't play a varsity sport could I still get into the Academy? and Did any of you play a varsity sport to get in?
Thanks!

Typically, around 90% of those in any class year played a varsity sport in high school. The link below is from the official academy website. So about 10% did not. However, it is a physically demanding program and you will be expected to keep up with your classmates regardless of your high school background, so it is certainly to your advantage to go into the program in the best possible physical shape. Many find playing a physically demanding sport in h.s. as one method of preparing for that…http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/USNA%202014%20Class%20Portrait.pdf

It is philosophical as well as physical. Fitness and preparation in both body and spirit. USNA and its Navy/Marine successors are simpy big, bad teams.

Whistle Pig has it right…Fitness and prep…teamwork, individual discipline to train (when it hurts or its cold and wet)…achievement (personal record). All of that matters. Hence the 90% who have that.
