Do I HAVE to use a thinkpad?

I was recently @ Wake Forest U. and the tour guide told us that we all get THink Pads @ Wake. My parents just bought me a gift a $3,000 Mac Book Pro. I already have a Windows based desktop computer which I built my self (it's designed for recording so its very powerful). Will I be able to use a mac @ WFU in conjunction with my desktop?

thanks

Ummm.... there's nothing stopping you from bringing them. I'm not sure how it will work with the campus wireless network, but I think that there's a guest wireless network on campus that you can also use and then just sign in when you need stuff that's only available on the student network. The dorm rooms are awfully small, though, and a desktop is going to take up a lot of room on your desk.

well the macs are designed to hook up with any wireless network windows or mac based, I'm just worried that I will end up with 2 laptops and then not know what to do with them

Ginny is right--the rooms are small. My son insisted on taking his desktop last year because it was faster, etc. That lasted until the first time we visited and he sent it home---took up way too much space and was such a hassle. At least if you use the 2 laptops you aren't talking space problems. Son and roommate only unpacked one of the printers and both used it to also save space.

when I visited I noted the rooms were small, but not THAT small! You can also stack your desk under your bed or something right? Or maybe that was Emory

Wait, the Mac Book Pro is a laptop right--not a desktop? I would probably leave the desktop at home, and bring the Mac Book Pro. You'll still be able to use the MBP, I assume, but you're going to get some strange looks around campus. Have you already been admitte? Didn't your parents know about the Thinkpads?

no prism hasnt been admitted yet. i assumed thats what he meant, but if you reread his post you can see that he just visited and has some questions

okay, gotcha

Don't know about all the dorms, but in the ones I saw, the desks are attached to the wall. Unable to loft over them.

Thanks for clearing that up jimbob

I guess the school that lofted was Emory

Does Wake Forest give the Think Pads for free, free in the sense that tuition covers the cost and there is no additional cost for the Think Pad?

Yep, Thinkpad is included in the price of tuition.

the desks aren't attached to the wall; you can loft over them.

Some dorms have the desks that are attached, some dont.

Cool so then I am going to have 2 laptops. I love my Mac Book Pro, and it was swell for my parents to get it for me, but I also get a Think Pad. Is there reduced theft because everyone gets a laptop?

My cousin goes to UT-Austin and laptop theft is rampant there

i would guess that there's low theft because everyone has one; i certainly don't know anyone who's ever had their computer stolen (knock on wood!), although i heard there was a problem last year with ipod thefts.

The ipod thefts were, I believe, the year before last, but I could be wrong. Laptop theft certainly isn't rampant, but I'd be careful, especially in the public places. Basically, I've not heard of many, if any, laptop thefts from dorm rooms whether they were locked or not (and a lot of people leave their rooms unlocked, though I'm not one of them). The only places I've really heard of a problem are in the library and in Benson. By and large, no student is going to steal another student's laptop because the campus network could track them, I believe, so they couldn't ever use them on campus, and so you really only have to worry about places that non-students can be.
