For example is it better to volunteer at a hospital rather than a library? I want to volunteer somewhere related to communications or business but don't really know any options out there...Suggestions? Please, even if they are not related to my major. Thanks so much please help.

It’s not about where you volunteer, it’s about what you do with your time while you are there. If you are interested in communications or business, find a local non-profit and offer to help out with the marketing, business and fund-raising parts of the organization. The more competence you demonstrate, the more responsibility they will give you - you have the potential to learn a great deal, make a real impact, develop some important contacts, and - more immediately - end up with a unique letter of rec and a potentially an interesting college essay.

You don’t have to volunteer…

And what your intended major is now is not extremely important to most colleges either.

2 myths…

If you show leadership, passion, and initiative in your description/essay/recommendations, then it really doesn’t matter where you work (unless it’s something extraordinary like NASA or the Princeton plasma labs).

Thanks guys! All your advice was really insighful! Thank you all for unique approaches and advice I’ll make use of all of it! =)
