Do I need a hook?

In your opinion, do you require a hook to get into Harvard nowadays, given the competition? Because, I'll be honest with you, I have bugger all in the way of hooks.

So whats your hooks? you happen to be the Stiffmeister 2?

Oh, well get one then! Ofcourse you need a hook to get into Harvard. That's probably standard.

You dont need a hook, you need luck :)

Still, to get in w/o a hook, you need good scores elsewhere, luck and at this point, a clean presentation. Write a fantastic essay that reveals yourself and your chances of admission goes up drastically.

You need a hook or amazing essays and recs.

...or maybe they just have to make a connection with you.

Why would you ask something as stupid as that? Are you seriously applying to harvard? Wow...good luck in April...you'll need it.

Hey stop playing the snobbish arrogant card. The guy still has a great chance to get in so your not making any sense with your condescending arguments.

what stiffmeister obviously meant to say was:

"YOUR not making any sense with your condescending arguments" is detrimental to the prosperity of this Harvard Forum, and your playing of the arrogant snob card is laughable. looking up at the ceiling going hahaha, like Jim Carrey

He just realized he was wasting his time on you and forgot to edit the sentence (or just didn't want to bother)

D'OH and Jeez. Your ;) a Harvard type, you should know that! Good luck in April, Dude! is there a 'rolling my eyes' smiley? Oops! Did I just ask a stupid question? I guess I won't get into Harvard- oh wait.... ;)

It's funny to see you get all worked up considering I really don't give a damn....I already got in EA. See you in the fall! Note the sarcasm

It's attitudes like that which perpetuate the myth of the Harvard snob. You can't go around telling people to "give it up" ,etc. You're not an authority on admissions. Don't be a jerk because you got in EA. It's applicants like you that Harvard tries to keep out of the Class of 2010.

yeah you are 100% a jerk. oh well, i dont know you and i dont care. still, someone in your life is going to care and you're gonna get screwed because of it.

haha whatever dude. I just find it pathetic of someone (who obviously got in) to sit at a forum and pick on hopeful prospective students instead of giving them constructive criticism with emphasis on sympathy.

Remix of Jimmy Souls - Happy for the rest of your life:
"If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
never make a pretentious Harvard EA your friend...." ;)

Rajamundo is a troll. Didn't get into Harvard EA (nor into Stanford EA as he has claimed with equally obnoxious posts in the Stanford forum). Best just to ignore him.

Actually, you DON'T need a hook. The majority of Harvard students have no hooks whatsoever.

A hook is more than something that makes you stand out. A hook is something that you are, some quality that you have, that is of benefit to the university and thus makes you more desirable.

Some hooks: URM, legacy, very wealthy, famous, son/daughter of someone wealthy or famous or politically connected, or some terrific achievement way beyond what regular talented people can achieve.

People often confuse hooks with ECs. A hook is something that you are; An EC is something that you do. They are not the same concept. Some ECs: music, art, student government, dance, sports, clubs, church, most leadership positions, community service, etc.

It's very hard to develop a hook. For the most part you've either got one or you don't. Either you are a URM or you are not; your dad is filthy rich or he's not, etc. About the only way you develop a hook is to be so good at your EC that it makes you famous --> e.g. writing a best seller or winning the Olympics, etc.

Everyone here is always a saying you must have a hook; gotta have a hook; hook, Hook, HOOK! Look, the basic things that affect your chances of admission are: Grades, Test Scores, Honors, ECs, Recs, Essays, Interviews, and Hooks. Of these, the one you have the LEAST control over is hooks. Forget about hooks and concetrate on improving the factors that you CAN control. Retake your SATs. Polish your essays. Do something useful. Worrying about hooks you don't have isn't one of them.

Thank you for that post, coureur! You have eloquently defined exactly what a "hook" is (outside it being an overused word on CC).

mundy - if you're going to be a 'troll', at least be a funny one.

sadly, the quality of trolls on CC has decreased substantially since iwannagoivy.

Indeed. Did anybody catch that ihateyou guy that appeared this morning? Sadly his trolling posts are reduced to nothing but vituperations against his subject's intelligence and imperatives ordering his subjects to consume defecation. The art of the previous generations are all but lost on him.
