Do I need Extra Circulars for FSU?

I am a junior in high school in Florida. I have 3 honors/pre aice classes which I have had every year except 10th grade which I had 2 honors and 1 AP. I moved from New York to Florida over the summer. Here is what I have:

1750 SAT (1180 without writing)(taking another one in January)
3.6 unweighted GPA

I want to know if I need EC's to get into FSU. I am new to this school and I haven't found a club to join yet, I was in two clubs in New York my freshmen and sophomore year, but none this year. Is it necessary to join clubs to get into FSU?

EC’s are not as “important” in admissions at FSU, as it is in some other schools (like UF).

At FSU, the most important factor is GPA and class rigor. Next is standardized test scores, talent/ability and state residency.

After that, other factors considered are class rank, application essay, extracurricular activities, first generation, Alumni/ae relation, volunteer work and work experience.

All of this is available in FSU’s CDS information (section C7).

http://www.ir.fsu.edu/Common_Data_Set/2013-14/C.html

You should focus on your grades (GPA) and SAT scores. If you want to qualify for the Bright Futures scholarship, you also should try to do some volunteer work (get that 100 hours!). Finally, you may want to work a part time job (if you can’t find a club that’s interesting).

Good Luck!

Do you absolutely, no doubt, need ECs? No. I’m sure plenty of students get in without any. Do they help? Sure.

Even if it’s just one club or one volunteer position somewhere, it can be beneficial. I wouldn’t completely waive off all of them just because you can probably get accepted without them.

Try taking the ACT this year and next year and see how you do. You will learn next year when applying FSU only looks at core classes and recalculate your gpa. Therefore, your gpa is just your core classes and Aps are +1 onto whatever you get and honors are .5 on whatever you get. Example: A = 5 in AP A = 4.5 in honors B = 4 in AP B = 3.5 in honors. Standard goes A = 4 B = 3 C= 2 D =1 F = 0. Just seriously focus on your gpa and take some classes on florida virtual school over the summer it is extremely easy and a quick way to boost your GPA. Colleges are not suppose to discriminate between flvs classes and real ones so I would do that over the summer going into senior year.
