I plan on transferring to a uc the fall of 2019. I have already completed business calc and the only other math I need is stats 1. Would I need to complete it before the end of fall or can I take it during the winter or spring? I heard somewhere where you have to complete your math the fall semester before you transfer, is this correct. I am majoring in BioPsych and I want to TAG UCSB
Wouldn’t business Calc fulfill the General Math req. you should check.
@Ohm888 Ye it does but I also need to take stats 1 for my major reqs ontop of that
I think you should be fine as long as you have the general ed req done already. I got into psych and brain sciences finishing my general ed math requirement (stats 1) over the winter, w/o tag. Unless the tag requires you to finish it at a certain point beforehand (idk personally cuz I never did TAG) you should be good. Tho it would probably help your case if you got it done by the time they look at your app, so by the TAU deadline which is the end of janurary.
All classes need to be done by the end of spring prior to transferring. Fall or spring it really doesn’t matter, but they cannot be taken during the summer prior to transferring.
@briank82 That’s not necessarily true. UCSB counselors/advisors stated that they don’t like students starting their math requirement in spring. UCLA even has majors, like mine for instance (psychology) that highly encourages students to finish their prereqs by fall instead of spring. In fact UCLA is notorious for rejecting econ majors who don’t have Calc done by fall. It’s not the same for every school and every major.
Eric he already has his math req completed (business Calc). Stats is a separate class. It should not be an issue with TAG when he takes it.
@ericbadmon The original question was if it needed to be done by fall, not what is preferred or what’s encouraged.
And the answer is, it needs to be done by the end of spring.
For what they like to see, that varies. They generally don’t like seeing several major pre-reqs saved for the last semester. But one or so isn’t gong to be that detrimental (if at all) to an application … especially with a TAG.
@Ohm888 I completed business calc at CSUN but now that I transfered to Pierce ( a CC) they cant tell me if it will qualitfy me. People were like, they cant tell me until they recieve my application. What should i do? or do u know anything about this?
Well, business Calc fulfills the req at a CCC, so as long as it’s 3 semester units or 4 quarter, I would think it would. Personally, I would send an email to the UC and ask.
@Ohm888 I have already spoken to a UCSB rep and they said that officially they cannot tell me until i have submitted my application but when i showed her my syllabus and coursework, she said it should be okay. But I wanted to be sure…
In the end they make the decision and are always vague. But this focus on minutiae is what people complain about when they talk about the difficult transfer process. It’s a calculus course (and they saw the syllabus and coursework). Even pre-calc fulfills the requirement. I guess to be 100% safe you could take a stats course, but it’s hard to imagine they’d ding you on this.
