Math Requirement

Hey guys, I’m planning to apply for Fall 2016 and I’ll have all my prerequisite classes done by spring, but the thing is I can take the UC math requirement (for me statistics) until the spring before transfer. Has anyone been admitted or heard of someone being admitted with a similar situation? I know all requirements have to be done by the end of Spring, but i’ve been hearing that if you don’t have a math completed by the end of Fall then you’re screwed.

In terms of TAG, almost all want math by fall, and UCSB wants math by fall for ALL applicants unless you have any other math course with a letter grade – even non-transferable, such as int. algebra will count if you have a letter grade.

Re the others, the 2015 transfer matrix says by spring. See page 30:

I know some people who saved math for Spring, and they all had acceptances. HOWEVER, part of their admission contract was to get a ‘B’ (or in some cases, B+) in their math class, which was very stressful for them.

^^^^ yep.

If I take stats in winter would I be able to call up the UCs and let them know I completed the math requirement by sending them a transcript of my winter session?

Eh, you’ll show the UCs you winter/spring schedule when you send in the January update. If you want you could send them an email, but I wouldn’t send a transcript. It probably won’t make a difference in your decision.

Plus, they’ll still probably give you a condition of B or above even if you take it in the winter.

Actually, I think that is a good idea. You could send an email to every UC you applied to with the winter grade as soon as you get it. It is not calculated into the admission GPA but many of the UCs take the winter grades into consideration during the process. Thus, they will at least see it is completed with a stated grade prior to their admission decision. There won’t be a provisional attached to it as they will have seen the grade before their admission decision.

However, as noted, you are allowed to finish it by spring. But of the two, the winter is a better option if you want to play it safe.

FYI, this year a guy had stats for winter and noted that in his November application. In the TAU in January he switched stats to spring, and within 24 hours got an email from the UC asking why he switched it. When he got accepted in April, his provisional said he needed a B in the course. They clearly didn’t like the fact he pushed stats back (considering they sent an email), which is quite likely why they attached the B requirement.

EDIT: one caveat. Check rate my professor. If the only teacher for it in winter has a bad rating and a spring teacher has a good rating, go spring.

Your other thread says you were already accepted to UCI?

If you plan to TAG somewhere, see page 3: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/tag-matrix.pdf

Hmmm, @Happy2Help, you’re right.
