Do I Need to Retract my Berkeley Application?

For the past few days, I have been trying to figure out a problem with the MAP@Berkeley supplement. I am applying to become an Applied Mathematics major and in the ‘major requirements’ section, the radio buttons for AP credit/placement are not showing up. In the College of Letters and Science webinar, I saw that for a different degree (Neurobiology I think?), AP exam could fulfill credit for that major (including the very same AP exam and equivalent courses) . Furthermore, this page (https://math.berkeley.edu/courses/choosing/ap-exams) seems to indicate that a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam should be ‘equivalent’ to completing Calculus 1A and 1B with eligibility to enroll in multivariable calculus. Yet, there is no radio button on the supplement to waive the Calc 1A and 1B requirements.

I called admissions and got different answers from them. One of them said to just indicate that I took AP calculus in the ‘additional comments’ section. A different officer told me that it was up to the community college to determine AP credit for applicability for major requirements. Unfortunately, the several community colleges I have attended follow the CSU AP credit policy where APs only apply to GEs, and not major requirements. Therefore, the second officer seems to be saying that I would have to retake Calc I and II, and reapply next year.

This is quite frustrating to me because I have taken numerous courses which have required the full breadth of skills from calc I and II, and all the other UCs and even other majors in the same college seem to not follow the community college policy.

So what should I do here? Call the math department? Call the College of Letters and Science? Retract my application?

I don’t have experience with the new MAP website, but you should be okay with just adding the info in additional comments.

I don’t know why the second adviser said that, but there is no separate policy for math AP credit for transfers (versus freshmen) within L&S and everyone follows the [established guidelines on the department website](https://math.berkeley.edu/courses/choosing/ap-exams)

II would consider emailing [Thomas Brown](Thomas Brown | Department of Mathematics at University of California Berkeley) as he could give you a definitive answer.

Just as a follow up, I called Thomas Brown and he said I should just indicate that the AP’s count for the calculus series in the additional comments box. This is what i ended up doing.
