Do I need to take Pre-Calc in HS?

I’ve been working on selecting courses for my junior year (this coming year) and I am seriously hoping I don’t have to take PreCalc. I took Algebra 1 in 8th grade, so as a sophomore I’m in Algebra 2. At my HS, Algebra 2 is the highest math we need to graduate, but 4 years are required. (I will only have 3 after this year). I’m thinking of taking no math class (or maybe a CCP college algebra class) next year and then taking an easy, review class my senior year.

My question is- will this path restrict me with college in any way? I want to major in Foreign Language Education, so math isn’t needed in the field I want to go into, but I’m not sure if I will need to take PreCalc for admissions purposes. I’ve always hated math and it’s the class I struggle in the most (my only B in HS is in math)

Thanks!

Hello! Is PreCalc a prerequisite for CCP college algebra? If so, you could either try to do it over the summer or if you can’t do it in the summer you’d have to take it during the school year. If you really want CCP college algebra in junior year, see if you can double up (both precalc and college algebra). If you’re going into Foreign Language Education, you won’t need super high math. Just stick to a regular level class. I would go ask your guidance counselor if I was you about this. I’m just a 15 year old who probably can’t give you too much info (and I am also an incoming junior!). Best of luck!

Like you, I’m also an incoming junior but with all of the small experience that I have, I think it might be a good idea to take Precalc even if you don’t like it. Taking Precalc will definitely help you with your SAT scores and despite your non-mathematics major, I feel like it still might be a good idea to get through things now as opposed to holding off in the future…better to be safe than sorry

Taking pre-calculus right now and it has helped me a ton on the SAT/ACT, especially the trig unit. I would take it so that colleges can see that you’re trying to take rigorous courses and in the end, it can be beneficial and keep your math skills up.
