Hey guys,
I’m a rising senior this year and I’ve taken three years worth of math so far (algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2/trig) but I’m not sure if I should take precalculus this year. I had applied to take precalculus this year, but my school didn’t give me a math class. I only need 3 years of math to graduate in my state and I’m wondering if it’s even worth the hassle of fixing my schedule. I’m already taking AP bio, AP human geo and AP econ/government this year.Math is also my worst subject and I’m worried that taking precalculus would hurt my overall GPA, but will it look bad on my college applications?
Please let me know what you think I should do and thanks!!
Do the schools you are applying to REQUIRE 4 years of math?
Do your possible college majors require calculus? (i.e. any science or engineering major, economics, business, or some other majors)
If so, then it is a good idea to take precalculus in high school, instead of as a remedial / developmental course in college.
@gnhcylk Does your school offer any other math choices? At my son’s school, after Algebra 2, you have the choice of pre-calc honors or college algebra for seniors. The pre-calc honors class is very hard with a tough teacher. The college algebra for seniors class is considered “pre-calc lite” by the math department.
His school also has AP Stats as an option after Algebra 2, but I know some colleges don’t consider that an advanced math class.
