Do I need to tell colleges my social security number?

I'm a Canadian citizen living in the US and applying to US schools. If I just recieved a SSN (but not a green card) do colleges consider me for financial aid? Do they use a ssn for anything?

Also, if I should send it should I send it by phone or email?

You have to apply for financial aid - they do not just automatically consider you for it. The main way of applying for financial aid for US citizens and eligible non citizens is FAFSA. You are probably not eligible for FAFSA if you do not have a green card (though you should check as there are some other types of Visas that would make you eligible). A SSN is not enough to qualify you for federal aid. Some schools require CSSprofile and I believe some will allow Canadian citizens to use CSS to apply for aid (Stanford for instance). Other schools probably haveother applications you must submit.

You will have to check with each of your schools to see what financial aid applications they require of Canadian citizens.
