Son accepted EA. On NEU site says all incoming freshman must complete FAFSA and CSS. We will not qualify for need based aid. Have not filed income tax either. However, he did qualify for Dean's $ and hopefully some additional merit $. Under scholarships it says you don't need to complete Fin Aid forms...so which is it?? I went ahead and completed the FAFSA but the CSS is $16. Thanks so much!

Do it! My parents have a house they bought a long time ago for very cheap, but is now in a very “rich” area and is now insanely expensive, and the year for taxes that they filled out for my first fafsa was also the year their bonuses put them into the next tax bracket-- aka, I didn’t even get work study. But I did get the maximum loans from the federal governments (Stafford). Even if you are certain you won’t get a loan offer and even if you are certain you won’t use loans to pay for school, FILL OUT THE FORMS ANYWAY. Worst thing that happpens? You either don’t get a loan offer, or you spend a few hours filling it out only to not actually need to use the loan offers. Either way, you can survive.

You can’t allow there to be even the slightest chance that come September you discover you need loans to pay for school and have to get private ones instead of federal. What happens if your financial circumstances change? If you filled out a fafsa, you call the fin aid office and bicker with them to change your award. You don’t file it, and how in the world are they going to change something that never existed?

File the forms!

Thanks so much. It says it is due before Feb 15th. Does this mean I must have it completed on the 14th or can I wait until the 15th as I would like to call them and ask some questions before completing. Thanks!

If you want to get it done today it really doesnt take long to fill out, only about a half hour or less. You can use your '08 taxes if you havent filed 09 yet and submit it then go back and make corrections once you have your 09s done. You basically just need your 1040 from 08 and you’re good.

what happens if you turn it in a day late?

They’ll still take it. I think I’ve turned mine in late every year…

Uh oh… where does it say “On NEU site says all incoming freshman must complete FAFSA and CSS” ?

We’ve been going by this statement, "Students are not required to complete the financial aid applications to be considered for a merit-based scholarship. "
[NU Scholarships – Northeastern University Student Financial Services](http://www.financialaid.neu.edu/grants/merit/NU_scholarships.php)

For merit-based scholarships, no, you DON’T need to do the fafsa or css. However I was trying to impress the point that even if you are certain you won’t get or use any need-based aid, you should file it anyway because you never know what might happen.
