KatMt, yes it was a great experience! The facilities are about the best we have seen so far. Must make it nice to go to work each day! Now the hard part! Waiting!

It does make it nice to go to work everyday. I loved going to work when my office was in a converted turkey hatchery for the past 4 years as well (the students, colleagues, etc… were the same), BUT it is great to finally be in facilities that reflect the work being done and how much everyone cares about the process, work, and one another. :)

Believe it or not, April 1 will be here before we know it!

Yes, I did transfer from NYU- I was in Strasberg last year, which isn’t offered to incoming students anymore. My main problems were the uncertainty I personally felt within the program, the lack of constructive critique I received in classes, and there were some issues with administration/other things as well thats besides the point. I just want to make it clear though, that everyones experience with a school, especially one as big and with so many studio options as NYU, will vary. I have friends there who love the school- and I have friends there who have left the acting program for one reason or another.
I have never once regretted my decision to transfer, and I am so glad that I did. Michigan is truly the right fit for me.
some questions to ask yourself:
- do you want to take theater classes everyday?- here they’re spread out so mon-fri we have theatre classes daily, which I find I love. other schools may do it differently. It’s a personal preference.
- do you want to learn a specific method?- we don’t focus on a single method here, they prefer to spread it out among various methods so you find what works best for you. Some people love finding a method and sticking with it though.
Basement Arts is great, but there’s also the Rude Mechanicals, and MUSKET, along with the RC Players and the Hillel Players. There are so many performance opportunities its crazy. If you’re interested in film, there is a great Screen Arts and Cultures (SAC) program on campus, and you can audition for student films. Also with the Michigan Film Initiative, more movies are filming in michigan than ever, which is great!
April 22nd is after classes get out, there will probably still be students around because its before finals, but nothing to sit in on I’m afraid.
And you don’t have to audition for BTA, just Acting.
let me know if you have more questions!

I believe that you are in good academic standing, but you may want to check collegeboard.com and read on there admissions details. Also, if you score well on the SAT then you should be good to get in. Good luck next year!

Hi Paige,

I’ll throw out our experience. My D originally wanted to go to an Ivy League school. After setting her sights on a BFA-MT degree we traveled around and UMich also became her heart’s desire. She was not admitted. After this we traveled to Indiana University-Bloomington. IU had everything she loved about UMich and she immediately fell in love. She’s now in her Junior year as a BA theatre major and I know she couldn’t imagine being anything other than a Hoosier. She finds lots of performance opportunities and thinks the quality of the education is wonderful. She is around MFA students and feels this inspires and pushes her. She just returned from a wonderful semester abroad in London. And now she is really happy she is in a BA program because she could easily see in her future wanting to pursue a MFA or grad degree.

Best of luck to you. Have faith that you are going to end up exactly where you are suppose to be.

@monologue: Literally couldn’t tell you how absolutely perfect that sounds to me. Like seriously, you have no idea. I would LOVE to have acting classes everyday… more than you will ever know! See I take acting classes currently, but I have it once a week… and literally the moment I step out of that class I count the seconds until I’m back in. I just LOVE the class because it’s so much fun and a great way to be creative and have no one judge you. It’s just amazing and I love having that freedom to play around with different techniques and such. All the performance oppurtunities I think is what REALLY sold the school to me, despite the fact that everything else is great (…with the exception of the cost and perhaps the grades to be accepted :/). For some reason I like really want to be in student films! I’ve watched some online – Camp Chapel, Margaret and Izzey, etc. – from UMich that I have really enjoyed and seemed very professional and great. Thanks for all you said. I of course have to keep my eye out because I know that it’s going to be hard so I need to have MANY options, but I’m definitely still looking forward to my April 22nd visit. I just have to find the Theatre Department head person and send them an email to see if they’re free for a meeting!!! :)

@britt022: Are you talking about academically at UMich or at other schools? I am currently in a SAT Prep class now that goes until May… in which I take them in May. So hopefully it’ll REALLY help me out!

@HoosierMom2012: Thank you for your story! That may just happen to be mine! Weird how both your daughter and I fell in love with UMich. There is certainly a chance I will not be accepted, but you know I can’t completely give up hope! I did look into Indiana University… is the main Indiana University in Bloomington or is that like a branch campus? Anyway, Indiana University seems great from what I see on their website! I may just have to visit it! And also I looked into University of Minnesota which sounds really great, though I would, I believe, have to fly down there. But it’s cheaper than UMich so my dad would be happy about that… haha! Thanks for the advice and I do believe that I will eventually end up where I am supposed to be!

Indiana University has 8 campus. The main campus’ are in Indianapolis (which I think is the center for most of the medical occupations) and Bloomington (noted for it’s Business School, Psychology School and Jacob’s School of Music)

Oh very cool I’ll have to check out the main campus and Bloomington!! Thanks!
