i did a bunch of volunteering at the st.louis food pantry my freshman/sophomore year but i don't anymore. should i include that on my app?

i've definitely expressed interest, i'm on the mailing list and i met with the representative who came to my school.

what is carleton's mascot?

The Carleton mascot is a Knight and the colors are navy and yellow;
your stats look comparable to, if not better than, my daughter's. I recall from orientation that they noted that a common thread of all "Carls" is service/volunteerism- you look good in that area. She is a VERY happy freshman at Carleton...

the knights!! haha thats the mascot of our rival. still cool though.

do you think i should mention the food pantry?

ps i'm glad your daughter is happy there! may i ask what state you are from?

I'd definitely mention the food pantry- just organize your resume by high school year. Massachusetts.

I'm a freshman here and I love it. Definitely apply because the application is free when you submit it online (I think that might be why I applied in the first place!), there's no supplement, and of course, the school rocks. You definitely have desirable stats but selectivity will probably increase a bit this year, as our class was overenrolled by at least 50-70 people. Good luck! Hopefully we'll see you here in the fall.

yeah, the free application is great!

im glad you like carleton. may i ask you a few questions about it?

I am also a freshman at Carleton!! Feel free to ask me any questions you have. (here or on aim my sn is listed)

oh, thank you so incredibly much:
1- do you like it? is there anything about carleton that you really love or really hate? anything you didn't expect?
2- how are the dorms? are they hall or suite style? how many separate dorms are there? how are roommates matched? which dorm should i request if i get in?
3- how are the teachers? i've heard good things, but thats mostly from the school website, so it doesn't really count.
4- i know its not vital, but is the food edible? is the weather bearable?
5- is the paper good/read by most of the students? is it difficult to get on staff?
6- what are the students like? do people dress up (i.e. makeup, nice clothes) for class?
7- what does the campus look like? is it separate from the surrounding area (gated, for example) or is it all mixed in with the city?
8- what classes are you taking? (just to get an idea of a freshman schedule)
9- what is the religious/political atmosphere on campus?

I will take these questions one at a time. Keep in mind I have only been here for a little less then half a trimester.

1- do you like it? is there anything about carleton that you really love or really hate? anything you didn't expect?

So far I really like the school. I love the friendly and intellectual atmosphere and the interesting if somewhat quirky people. As of yet I have nothing I really hate about the school. (except the food which I will cover later) One thing I did not expect was how easy the adjustman was for me to go from HS to College. I highly recommend taking a pre frosh trip if you do come here it helped me meet a lot of people early in a smaller more personal environment.

2- how are the dorms? are they hall or suite style? how many separate dorms are there? how are roommates matched? which dorm should i request if i get in?

The dorms vary significantly. There are a lot of different dorms and some have different styles then others. (some have private bathrooms vs floor bathrooms, or partitioned rooms for more privacy)
When you get in you are given an extensive roomate question sheet to fill out which the colleges uses to match up roomates. In general the school seems to do a good job with those who answer honestly, and I have only seen one case of total incompatibility among my friends. (and that resulted in them moving to a new room resolving the situation)
I got unlucky and ended up at the dorm with the rep of being the worst on campus. It is kind of small, has frequent loud trains that pass by, mediocre bathrooms, ect. However, since it is mostly freshmen, the floor life is great. However, you get no choice on where you live till sophmore year so no need to worry about that. If you get a room at Nourse, Watson, or Davis be happy.

3- how are the teachers? i've heard good things, but thats mostly from the school website, so it doesn't really count.

The eachers I have are pretty good though I have not had much experience yet. My math teacher is not amazing but it is his first year teaching here. Both my other teachers are very smart and interesting people who I like a lot.

4- i know its not vital, but is the food edible? is the weather bearable?

UGH! The dining hall food is driving me insane. I come from a HS with an open campus and used to eat at delicious local places every day and that made the transition pretty bad. I suppose the food is typical cafeteria quality. It gets old kind of fast though. There are some nice local places to get food in town though. As far as the weather it has been really hot but I cannot tell you how bad it will be till I have experienced a real Minnesota winter. :)

5- is the paper good/read by most of the students? is it difficult to get on staff?

The paper seems pretty good. I have read the first two issues when they came out. I am sorry I do not know much about the process of becoming a staff member though.

6- what are the students like? do people dress up (i.e. makeup, nice clothes) for class?

Some people dress up nicely but many do not. As far as I can tell people are not really judged on what type of clothes they wear or how much makeup they have on. I am not saying we are all a bunch of unkempt hippies, but people here are really laid back on that sort of stuff.

7- what does the campus look like? is it separate from the surrounding area (gated, for example) or is it all mixed in with the city?

The campus is quite beautiful. It is fairly compact but is not too small. It is seperate from the city, although there is not a gate you have to walk through to get there.

8- what classes are you taking? (just to get an idea of a freshman schedule)

This first trimester I am taking
Calculus 3
Catastrophes and the Worlds They Cause (seminar)
America: Liberty and Equality

Here you take 3 courses each trimester, or 9 courses a year.

9- what is the religious/political atmosphere on campus?

The political atmosphere is very liberal though I have several conservative friends here. There are a lot of people from different religions here, though this is not a very religious school in general. Though if you are religious you will not feel left out nor will you be alone.
Sorry I do not have time to answer some of your questions in more detail but I have to get some work done. I may come back later to elaborate on some answers.

hahaha you're going to elaborate MORE? you are excellent!!!

but don't let me keep you from your homework. (speaking of homework, about how much do you get a night? do you go to one class a day or all three every day?)

ahhh i'm sorry, i'm bombarding you with questions again. i'm just ravenous for unbiased information.

HW varies signifcantly. I tend not to get a huge workload this term. For math I usually have about an hour and a half of problems to complete for each class. (we meet for 70 minutes every mon/wed/fri)

My seminar is discussion based so mostyl I just have to do reading for it and get maybe an hour or so for each class (also meets 70 minutes mon/wed/fri)

My polisci class has the most work this section with the occasional paper and about 3 hours of reading for each class day. (which only meets tue/thur for 105 minutes)

I would say that answers both your questions :)

This also varies in the people who spend a lot of time studying and doing work in advance and slackers like me who wait until the last minute to do everything. Also keep in mind you are not in class that long a day at all so everyone usually has a ton of free time. (which most fill up with several EC activities) This is not a school where many people cut class or don't do work. This school very much has a work hard playhard type mentality which leads to some busy workfilled weekdays followed by fun carefree weekends.

wbm777, I think you're in my Calc 3 class. You have Egge, right? Yeah, I don't think he's so fantastic either.

But other than that, classes are pretty good. My seminar (The Carleton Miscellany - first year it's being run) is pretty interesting and laid back. I just finished a paper for it this morning. And I highly recommend taking Japanese if you come here, acc_bound. It goes very fast and it's tough, but the class and my prof (Tomonari) are both amazing.

So far, my only complaints are (1) the food, (2) the general lack of attractiveness of the girls here, though there are some exceptions, and (3) sometimes the lack of stuff to do Friday night.

Great website. I'm from Arkansas and interested in applying here too. I'll probably post my resume in a few weeks.

I have a few questions of my own (I don't want to raid a thread here, so I'll move if needed):

Is the financial aid given here comparable to other liberal arts schools? I'm banking on my academic record, geographic location (there was only one person from Arkansas that went to Carleton last year), semi-minority status (half Asian/ half German), and economic background (middle class, 3 other siblings -- 1 just graduated from medical school, 1 in medical school, 1 in college, pretty old immigrant parents :-p) I've also made my interests in Carleton know by sending my AP, PSAT, and SAT/ACT scores there.

Should I apply early decision? I'm very interested in attending Carleton..... but I don't want to apply and find out my scholarship money is inadequate.... Then again, I heard that early decision applicants get first priority....

How is the social scene? Honestly, I'm not a crazy partyer, but I'm not a "goody-goody" either.

How the hell do I enroll in the 3-2 program?
This is initially what sparked my interest in Carleton. Do I need to apply to Washington University and/or Columbia concurrently? I read the Columbia University website....and it didn't have very much information.

the supplement to the common app for carleton is among the longest I have seen!

"the supplement to the common app for carleton is among the longest I have seen!"

Yea when there was a prospie here she pointed it out to me so I checked for myself. The supplement is new this year in the past there was no supplement for the common app. I do not think the supplement is too bad... unlike some supplements that ask more long essay questions, the Carleton one just asks a few short answer that are fairly straightforward. (most influential teacher, why you are interested, ect)

But for the time it takes to fill that out its WORTH IT. Oh and it is still free online at least :)

Haha I'm filling out the supplement as we speak (...type?). It's probably the longest one I've had to do.

hey! i know this is a completely random question: do you go to lbj?

Hi, I just saw this resurface and I just wanted to reassure you about getting in. Admissions are a crapshoot but my stats were not nearly as impressive as yours are. Basics: 1990 SAT, 103 [actually i think 114 when I applied] out of 677, 4.01 [actually.. a 3.98 weighted when I applied] weighted. I'm not a legacy, I am a minority though who is National Hispanic Merit. This year I took 4 IB courses, 2 APs, and one Pre-Ap, as well as regular government. And I had some random extra-currics.

Basically I just showed Carleton that I would really like to go there and I felt I would do really well there. College Confidential scared the crap out of me about admissions though.

Also! You're from Texas! Hooray! Me too! Being from the south is an advantage I've heard. [I'm from Houston!]

Ficciones - Lamar?

I do go to lamar.

[When I typed a simple 'yes' a box popped up telling me to right more.. so thusly the odd phrasing]
