Hi i am a sophmore in high school and i have always wanted to go to Cornell. Freshman year i was in all honors classes and had A's and B's and was on the football team. But things took a turn for the worst during my first semester of sophmore year when a family crisis resulted in behavioral issues and depression. It will be explained in my secondary school report when i apply. But long story short, my GPA went from a 4.9/5 to a 4.3. But things have changed for me and i have realized that i must change.

First off, i want to get into the college of agriculture and life sciences as an applied economics and management major. If i get A's in Honors and Ap classes for the rest of high school, get in the mid to upper 30s on my ACT, and join the business club (DECA) and a sport, and have a great essay and great recomendations, do you think i may still have a chance at Cornell?

p.s. i am native american so that may help in the admission process.

It’s definitely worth a shot. Being a minority will help. And also if you do very well on your ACT and any SAT Subject tests, it may alleviate some of the damage done from your sophomore year.

Keep the GPA high and take hard, challenging classes. Do well in your AP’s. Succeed, and Cornell will definitely be possible.

I was thinking “most likely not,” and I was thinking of ways to say it, until I read your last sentence. Yeah, you’re pretty much guaranteed acceptance even if your GPA stays at a 4.3 (not really; just get back to your previous standards, get good scores like mistervert said, and then you’re pretty much guaranteed acceptance).

Native American is not necessarily an advantage nowadays, with affluent middle/upper class folks claiming Native American ancestry. If you expanded upon your cultural upbringing as a Native American in your essay, that might help. The family crisis will only help you if you write about it, although behavioral issues will hurt no matter what if they are on your transcript . As for EC’s, focus on one and/or get a bunch of leadership positions.

Being a minority will DIFINATELY help you, since there are so few native americans in college as it is. Ivies are always reaches for everyone, even the best of the best, so its definately worth a shot. Good luck.
