Do I still have a chance at getting into a good school?

I’m 20 and I completed one year of college. First semester, I was a business major. I didn’t like it and after some testing, I decided on engineering. I would have to wait until the next semester to switch. I failed 2 classes my first semester (Algebra and English). I retook them in the second semester and passed Algebra with an A or B. I got through English with a D. I wasn’t fully into my new major yet because I chose to retake the required classes I failed. I failed Chemistry in my second semester. I couldn’t understand it no matter how hard I tried. I had a sick relative who needed a lot of help. I would often have to leave class or even not go to school to help this person. I would sometimes step out to answer the phone because 99% of the time, it was very important. No, I’m not blaming them at all. There was just too much going on for me to be able to attend school and do well. I’m currently not in school because of everything that’s going on in my life. I plan on going back to school when I can. I will probably retake the classes for a better grade. Should I retake the English class in which I got a D? Should I retake Chemistry as well? I understand that retaking classes may not get rid of a bad grade but, it will show improvements. I want to get the best education I can. Engineering programs can be selective. Plus, I’d like to go somewhere new. Paying for school isn’t an issue (it’s a long explanation that I don’t feel like explaining). Do I still have a good chance or is it too late?
