I'm going to be a senior and I want to know if I still have a chance at schools like Yale, Williams, Tufts, and Duke. I'm a girl and I go to a competitive private school in CT.
Freshman and sophomore years my GPA was pretty low (3.55 UW), but I worked really hard junior year and got a 4.0 UW. I've taken 4 AP's so far and got 5's on all of them and am taking 4 more senior year.
After sophomore year I began losing weight and lost about 100 pounds in total. Losing weight helped me become more motivated in general, resulting in my higher GPA and much more involvement in ECs, including student council prez and Editor-in-cheif of the school newspaper, model UN, model congress(and other stuff I don't feel like listing)
I am captain of the xc team this year and play varsity lacrosse. I have 200+ hours of community service. I also started a group through my gym helping teens to lose weight.
I have been playing violin for 15 years, and play in my school orchestra and local symphony. I also play piano, guitar, and mandolin.
THANKS! :)

Test scores? Ethnicity?

What are your test scores?
Class rank?

Without knowing more, I’d say with unremarkable ECs and a cumulative UW GPA around 3.7, your chances at these schools aren’t good.

2300 SAT, 800 US history, 800 Chem, 760 Biology E, 740 Math II didn’t take the ACT, and I’m white.

It’s cool, thanks for being honest, I knew I probably didn’t have a chance.

School doesn’t calculate class rank.

How is your weighted GPA?

And I would unfortunately have to agree with sherpa. I’m assuming that you posted succinctly, but your ECs look unimpressive. Your test scores, which are excellent, seem to be your only saving grace. Remember that competition within top-notch private schools is very fierce; your chances can very much so be defined by who else in your grade is applying to the same schools as you.

My weighted GPA is a 4.2 (took all APs and honors). My dad went to Tufts and does admissions interviews and talks Tufts students looking to go into his field, but I’m guessing it’s still a long shot. Could you suggest some schools that would be matches for me?

A 3.7/4.4 is honestly not a bad GPA. I’m not sure how it might stack up in your class, but you’ll at least be in range of all the schools you listed.

Regardless, your numbers are fine for Tufts. With legacy, it’ll be an easy match. I think both sherpa and my posts were more in the direction of Yale and Williams.

Your scores, which are great, change my outlook a bit. Yale and Williams are big reaches, but Tufts or Duke might be in your future.

Congrats on losing weight, and nice of you to help others with that, too.

Good luck.

Thanks. My weighted gpa is actually a 4.2, it’s 2 AM and I got confused lol.

I think you could make a good essay out of your story, and good job on the losing weight. Yes those schools above are reaches but their worth applying to. My advice is that you go for it and apply to all of them. But make sure your college list has safeties and good matches. Good Luck :)

Tufts look doable.

I think you’d be competitive at any of the schools on your list. Your grades don’t rule you out, and your scores are very strong. Once you tell your story to the admissions committees, I think they will find you to be the kind of person whose life story makes her sound like someone who would contribute something to the school community.
