do low gpas EVER get accepted?

i've been glancing through the stats profiles of accepted students recently and its just really depressing me lol. the accepted students that post here have such strong profiles. and the gpa's are always solid. my gpa is like a 3.33 but my test scores are relatively strong (well not strong for these threads but they're alright). 30 on the ACT, 2100 on the SAT. i do a ton of extracurriculars and i go to a very competitive private highschool. i'm also fairly involved with charity work and have 4 years of varsity wrestling and 3 of varsity football. i feel like i have a decent enough profile to be accepted but i'm SO scared that my GPA will hold me back. anyone have opinions on this?

3.33 is a indeed quite low - average unweighted GPA for accepted students was 3.7 or thereabouts. If you wish to get in, you need to distinguish yourself in some way, be it athletic accomplishments, a stellar essay, or whatever. It will be an uphill climb but is is possible. Good luck.

just keep in mind that gpa is not the only determining factor... and that the people who post here are not the majority of the applicants. its no surprise that people here have high stats (heck, mines not even as great as most of these other people), i mean, stereotypically speaking, think about it-- we're the students who are actually on a freaking college discussion board. lol... who does that other than the people who have the high goals..? basically, dont focus too much on other people's stats--they really dont matter. all you really have to do is stand out as a student or person in general and if they like you, then youre good to go :]

With a 3.3 GPA, you really would have to have a significant hook. There certainly are students that are accepted with similar grades, but they usually have something about them that really distinguishes them.

My GPA unweighted was about a 3.4 weighted was a 3.7, i got in for the spring which is considered being accepted.

fwiw, someone on these boards said they got in with a 3.4/3.5 UW, 2070 SAT.

you should be fine, just be sure to write strong essays and have strong recs too. i had a 3.43 uw gpa and sat 2110 and im starting fall '07. dont be discouraged by the other people's stats, if you really want to go to usc you can make it happen

I don't think GPA is nearly as important as your class rank. It tells USC how you stand in relation to your piers who undertook coursework at the same level of rigor as you. Would you mind sharing this with us?

If your school does not rank, and/or USC is not familiar with the competitive nature of your high school, it would be wise to have a counselor or advisor draft a letter to the admissions office explaining the competitive nature of your school and the difficulty of your coursework.

USC truly does look at the applicant as a whole. Though I have 3.8 UW GPA I still received 4 or 5 B's and 2 C's throughout high school. I was still accepted due to my extra-curricular involvement and stellar recommendations, which allowed them to overlook certain deficiencies in my transcript and SAT scores.

I think you've got a solid shot, but admission is by no means a slam dunk. Good luck next year and please don't hesitate to ask your fellow CC'ers for help.

I think it's overly optimistic to say "you are fine." Sure it's possible to make it happen and getting in is within the OP's reach, but he is clearly at a disadvantage as a result of the GPA.

Keep in mind that GPA by itself is never a decision making factor. GPA is almost always considered along with class rank and rigor of academic record. If you took challenging courses and your class rank is high, that is if your school deflates GPA, you will be fine.

To answer your question, yes, as far as I know any college in the US accepts some students whose GPA is lower than 3.5.

my school doesn't rank. its a very competitive school and from talking to the USC representatives that have visited and have come to the college fairs around here they say that they are very familiar with the school and think that each student is a very strong one. so i guess that SORT of works to my advantage. but i'm just worried. my junior year GPA is probably like a 3.6 weighted which helps a little but i really messed up freshmen and sophomore year with a lot of c's. (but i had ADHD and wasnt tested until the end of sophomore year. and as soon as i started working with it and taking medication my grades went from almost all c's and low b's to high b's and a few a's)

so i dunno i know colleges like to see improvement and well rounded students and i have that. but even with the huge improvement i dont know if i can make up for freshmen and sophomore year. i'll just pray on it i guess lol

oh yeah and i'm a minority (part white part black part native american lol) and i'm also a first generation college student. i dont know if that is a big factor and i dont like to bring it up alot because i think its sort of unfair if i would get special consideration from that but yeah just thought i'd throw that out there i guess

and while you're at it, why don't you just "happen" to mention that you've discovered the cure for cancer? lol jk. that list bit of info definitely made you go from a probably not to a definitely possible/within reach.

This is a couple of days old, but I thought I'd mention it. I am accepted into USC (majoring in interactive entertainment) and I only had a 3.2. I had a pretty decent SAT score, but what got me in were my recommendations and my writing supplements.

I agree with amazon3001. Class rank shows more - maybe teachers at your school just grade really hard, esp. in comparison to other high schools. Maybe in your case, an interview would be helpful.

this thread is really helpful and gives me hope...thanks guys for the advice

I have around a 3.5 unweighted, but still in the top 9% of my class due to the rigorous coursework.

It all really depends.
