Do merit scholarships actually exist?

Merit scholarships are not rare, they are readily available to anyone who develops an informed and deliberate strategy for obtaining them. However, applying to schools with no planning or strategy will indeed make merit scholarships seem unobtainable.

Congrats to your daughter on the Stamps scholarship! may I ask your daughter’s stats? I have been reading about this exceptional program and wondered about the selection process.

Merit scholarships are available but you need to know where to apply. Both my kids received merit scholarships from various schools (we do not qualify for need based financial aid). They targeted schools known to award full tuition merit scholarships. They knew they had to cover the OOS tuition cost as we have perfectly good in-state schools and we made it clear we would only pay the in-state cost. They will both graduate debt free :)

Stamps is available at many schools. Each school may have a different selection process. For Miami, you have to be invited for their scholarship weekend. DS2 was invited and while not selected for the Stamps; he was awarded the Singer (full tuition scholarship).
