Do most honors college freshmen live in the Honors Residence Hall if they request it?
I read on the website “All incoming freshmen will be placed in honors housing, which includes locations such as Honors Residence Hall, Woodrow, and 650 Lincoln.” I think that would be my son’s first choice, but he didn’t submit his application until October 14th, which I am guessing puts him at the end of the honors housing queue.
Used to be that all 1st year SCHC students were in the Honors Residence Hall. In 2015 when my D started, she was originally scheduled to live in Woodrow (applied just a day or two before the deadline), but space opened up in the HRH about 2 weeks before classes started and they put all the 1st years in the HRH. D liked it there but was ready to get out of the dorm set-up by year’s end.
In 2016, they purposefully slotted some Honors freshmen into Woodrow so that there would be a “critical mass” in there, rather than just the handful that didn’t fit in the HRH. D had moved to 650 Lincoln by then so doesn’t know how that worked out, but she thinks that Woodrow would be fine as it’s a very central location and has active RAs to organize activities.
650 Lincoln is very nice aesthetically and a great location for business, engineering, and music students, but would not recommend it for a 1st year. She rarely saw the other people who lived on her floor, but fortunately had friends in other apartments in the same building–but of course she knew them from freshman year when they all lived in the same dorm. She is headed off campus for Year 3.
What your S might do is join one of the social media groups and try to find a roommate with an earlier app date who can “pull him in” to the HRH or Woodrow. Or if he goes to one of the accepted student events, he might meet someone there. I don’t think that a mid-October app date sounds too bad, honestly (but that’s if the deadline was in November).
Thanks for the detailed information. I think S’s first choice would be the HRH (but they do talk it up on the website as being a perk of the program. It sounds really nice!) And you’re right. The honors college deadline was mid-November. I was thinking of the mid-October EA deadline which he just barely made.
It sounds like none of the options are dorms to avoid - good to know.
very helpful - D accepted into honors program and was trying to sort out the housing options! Can someone post the groupme link - will encourage her to join. Thanks again for the info.
