Do my essay responses align with what Bowdoin is looking for? Are my responses good enough?

@Waterborne I will reapply during my freshman year in college, right? Thank you for the advice regarding the advice.

@gpa348 You do not even need to wait until then if you applied early decision; you only need to wait until you get your letter in the mail or via email if you do not get in.

@Waterborne But what if we cannot reapply if we are denied early decision?

I was actually wrong. You’re right, you can’t reapply until the following year.

@Waterborne So, just apply next year if denied?

yes

@Waterborne Thank you very much.

You’re welcome.

Your essays are fine. You have an interesting story and will have a lot to offer. Don’t be dissuaded by @Waterborne - I am a law school professor and I read many essays.

@Gpa348 my advice is just let everything be and see what happens. Don’t stress at this point, it’s not worth it.

@sciencenerd123 @Deaston

I see that @Deaston commented on a post made by @sciencenerd123 , saying that being a URM will be a hook. I know that @sciencenerd123 is from Iraq, but can being an African American be a hook since I will be at Bowdoin, which has a 6.4% black population? Also, Brunswick, Maine only has a 0.83% black population.

@Gpa348 That is a definite hook. African American is considered URM, so that will for sure help you. I live in Maine, about 25 minutes away from Bowdoin (I’m applying RD), and I can tell you Maine is not very diverse. Colleges are always looking for diversity. Of course, it can only get you so far. You have to also be strong academically.

@Sciencenerd123 Okay, so I have a 3.54-3.55 unweighted GPA. I have a 3.97 weighted GPA.

I have taken 7 AP classes. Let’s assume that I will be in the top 11-12%; I might even be in the top 10% at the most.
I go to an Optional School, which is one of the better public schools in Memphis, Tennessee. I go to Central High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

I come from an iZone school, a school that is the bottom 5% in testing and in academic performance. I started high school with a 3.0 unweighted and weighted GPA. In my first year, I took all traditional classes. I do not remember my grades, but I know that I improved my GPA to a 3.2143. I went to East high school over the summer to get my credit in French II, and I got a 92 in that class, which is a B.

Sophomore year, I transferred from the iZone school to the Optional School I am a student at now. I took Honors Etymology first semester, Honors Mythology second semester, Pre-AP English, Honors Biology, gym(required), Accounting 1(a regular class that has no honors level), Honors French II, and Honors Geometry. I got 4 A’s and 3 B’s first semester; I got all A’s second semester of sophomore year.

Junior year, I took AP Lang, APUSH, and AP Government, Honors Chemistry, Honors Algebra II, and Accounting 2(regular class that has no honors level)
I got 4 A’s and 3 B’s both semesters; I got A’s in all of my AP classes.
I took Microeconomics and World History online at Christian Brothers University over the summer before senior year, receiving A’s in both of them.

Senior year, I am taking Honors Anatomy and Physiology, Honors Precalc, AP Lit, DC Sociology, AP Computer Science Principles (1st year offered at my school), AP Euro, and AP Psych.
I got an A in Anatomy, AP Euro, AP Psych, AP Comp Sci.
I got a B in DC Sociology and Honors Precal.
I got a C in AP Lit :frowning:

Is there any academic strength in that?

Thanks in advance!

Hi!

Current student at Bowdoin here! I think your perceived dual interest in both business and social justice could be beneficial to you (contrary to other posts). Idk if you know, but our student body is very diverse in interest. Your typical “Wall Street” stereotype could be an art major or the basketball team captain could be a tutor at a local school. What I’m trying to say is that Bowdoin’s students don’t fit into a stereotype and so not falling into a cliche like that could be good for you. In fact, my class (2021) is suppose to be the most diverse in terms of many aspects (first gen, ethnicity etc…) to date at Bowdoin. A dual interest in both business/social justice could show diversity and so overall it could strengthen your profile! But again, idk what admissions is going for this year in terms of the class of 2022. Best of luck!

BUMPPPPP. I asked @sciencenerd123 if there was any academic strength in the stats I posted. I was wondering if anyone could answer the question.

Thanks in advance!

Getting into Bowdoin with your GPA is going to be a struggle for sure, and I assume you’re not sending SAT/ACT right? It’s not impossible, but it will be an uphill battle. Are you applying EDII?

@sciencenerd123 I am not sending my scores. I have applied EDII.

@sciencenerd123 Can you give me an overall review of my stats?

Also can anyone answer the question I posted about my essays? If you want to know what question I am referring to, please check the title of this thread.

The Bowdoin Common App seems to omit ALL of the test scores btw, even if the applicant has opted to share:

*Note this college has chosen to not include certain Common Application answers in the PDF they receive for your application. As a result, the following answers will not be displayed in your PDF: ACT / SAT Tests - Scores Only, AP / IB / SAT Subject Tests - Scores Only, TOEFL / IELTS / PTE / Leaving Exams - Scores Only."

If opting to share standardized test scores, the application lists the test names and dates, but no score at all.

@ChickenInTheCar I know, I want to know if my academic stats will help or jurt my chances at admission given that I have not shared my SAT/ACT scores and have applied ED II.
