I’m not christian (not religous at all for that matter), a democrat (I love Obama), and basically a die-hard liberal. The reason I’m considering Baylor over UT Austin is that Baylor gave me enough aid that a year at Baylor would only be $900 more than a year at UT (didn’t get ANY aid from them), and at Baylor I know I would get a lot more attention as students tend to get lost at UT. I’m a journalism major by the way. Please be honest in saying how you think I’ll do when it comes to fitting in, finding friends, and treatment. I’ve heard some bad things about Baylor when it comes to treatment of non-conservatives and then I’ve heard some people say it isn’t true. Be blunt, I can take it. (However that’s not an invitation to start bashing me or anything.)

Alright old sport. I applied and got into Baylor, too. I’m going to UT Austin though. What turned me away from Baylor was their journalism program. It’s just not that great. I remember going to a spring premiere my junior year and attending a journalism session. For one, the the facilities were below par, and two, the instructors didn’t do a good job selling Baylor Journalism.

You said that you are liberal and anti-religious. While that’s not exactly a double-negative at Baylor, keep in mind that it is Baylor (conservative and religious). I’m sure that there are some student groups that would cater to your interests, but you would definitely be in the minority.

On the other hand, UT Austin has a lot of what you are looking for. Liberal, open environment with opportunites in journalism that are endless. The Daily Texan (University newspaper) is regarded as one of the top college newspapers in the country.

While you contest that Baylor will give you more attention, you must understand that if you seek attention, then you can get it.

I grew up in Austin, but graduated from Baylor with a Journalism degree. I would tell you to go wherever you want. There are good and bad things about both campuses. I had numerous friends who were at both schools and it really depends more on what your taste is than anything else. Go back and talk to both Baylor and UT about what they are doing in Journalism and see which is more your style. I found the personality and warmth of the professors at Baylor was a better environment for me, but you may feel differently.

There is a conservative mindset on campus, but if you are from Texas, then you are used to being in the minority in that realm. I found many bright minds in both camps during my time there. Good luck!

I am attending Baylor this fall and am also 1) not religious at all, 2) very liberal, and 3) a democrat. I was wondering the same thing since I’m pretty sure I’ll end up offending some of the more conservative people there.

I’m pretty sure are other people there who are not religious. Not everyone there is completely conservative. My friend, who is also attending Baylor and is going to be my roommate is a straight-up liberal hippie.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
