I am interested in attending Baylor and was wondering how there journalism program was? and also what do i need to get into Baylor?

Baylor’s journalism program isn’t on the same level as UT’s by any means, but it’s not bad, either. The Baylor Lariat (on-campus newspaper) wins awards on an annual basis, and the majority of the staff are journalism majors, so that speaks volumes in and of itself. Although it’s not the first program I’d recommend to people wanting to major in journalism, I wouldn’t say not to go, either, as Baylor itself is an excellent school and the overall education you would get there is of an extremely high quality.

As far as what you need to get in, I got in accepted almost 5 years ago with a 1970 SAT (on 2400 scale), a 31 ACT, 3.34 GPA, 4 years of marching/concert/pep band with one year as section leader, extremely high levels of activity at my church and in my church’s district youth council, some outside volunteer hours, and 3-4 other clubs at school, including an officer position. It has actually gotten more competitive (their selection rate is nearing the 33% mark, I believe) since I applied, though, so I would recommend a 30 minimum ACT and/or 1950 minimum SAT score, plus at least a 3.4 GPA (3.5 if you aren’t as involved in high school as I was). They also love high levels of church activity, but lots of non-Christians attend Baylor, as well, so if you are not a Christian or don’t really have that mindset, general involvement in the community (tutoring, mentoring, etc.) would make you golden. It also never hurts to have some ECs on your record. They don’t have to be NHS President or similar, just something that shows you were involved. I was never even in NHS, but I joined several clubs relating to art, plus FBLA for two years and FEA for one year and that served me well.

If you have a lower GPA, don’t panic, whatever you do. As long as it is safely above a 3.0 and there is an upward trend in your grades, plus you have the other elements I mentioned, you should still have a chance. Good luck!
