Like, from out of state FL, does it make sense for them to go??

Lots of parents will be at orientation – I went, but it’s only a 3 hour drive for me. If money or time are too big of an issue, then it’s fine not to go, but I’m glad I went. But the answer is Yes, parents really go to orientation.

I didn’t go with my daughter in order to save a chunk of money (from California). She said most people had a parent there, but it wasn’t a big deal that I missed it. If we lived closer I would have loved to go, but being on her own did give her a good taste of what being at college alone would be like.

Mine aren’t going with me. I’d actually rather have them there, more for the purpose of ensuring I don’t miss my flight or not make it from Indianapolis to Bloomington.

How do we know where the shuttle to IU is when we get to Indianapolis?

There are a lot of parents there, but it is split up so it will mostly just be you doing things.

Also, I know the shuttle drops people off at the very front door of the upstairs part of Indy airport (never picked up the shuttle from Indy, only dropped off there).

Sure do. There is really good info for the parents. They run on a separate track from the kids. Really valuable.

There are two shuttle companies and both are located at Ground Transportation. Just follow signs for Ground Transportation after you disembark into the main terminal and you will find the shuttles. You can purchase tickets on line in advance for cheaper, but in some ways it is best to just get there and see which is leaving next so you don’t have to wait too long.

I went to Orientation and enjoyed it a lot. I met other parents with whom I have kept in touch and since I am on the east coast that has been very nice. There were seminars tailored to parents that i found interesting. If cost is an option, the school allows parents to stay in dorms for a low price.

Yes, many parents do go to orientation. And, as said earlier in this thread, most of the time parents are not with their students. My husband and I were happy to go, but we only had a 4.5 hour drive. While it was a positive experience, if your parents can’t attend, it’s not really a problem. They aren’t going to miss any crucial information. But, if they haven’t visited before, it could give them a level of comfort to see what kind of environment you’ll be living in.

I have to agree with IllinoisMom, parents don’t have to go. There is some good info but the parents are split from their students so…I would say they can go alone.

Your parents don’t have to go, but almost all of them are glad they did. IU does special activities for the parents so that they also know what’s going on and they get a lot of information, as well as their questions answered. If it’s too expensive, I would understand why you wouldn’t want them to. But honestly, everyone is there with their parents.
