Do people ever get into top-20 schools with straight Bs in math?

Aside from my crappy performance in math, I've been an excellent student. But I've had mostly Bs in my math classes, and now I'm about to get another B in AP Statistics. I'm only taking three other academic classes so this does not look good at all. Mostly, I'm just angry at myself for not studying as hard as I possibly could have. I have an 88% in the class, but it may as well count as an 80%.

The only reason why I didn't apply ED to Dartmouth was because I'd sworn to myself that I'd bust my ass off to get a 4.0 this semester. Now that's not happening, and this anxiety is not going to lift until April. I didn't declare a major in rocket science, but my Bs are definitely going to hurt my application. Does ANYONE ever get in with crappy grades in one subject?

The only 3 other academics class does look bad, but yes, plenty of people get into Top 20s with only B’s in one subject. If all your other classes are A’s, then there’s no reason why you wouldn’t be accepted.

Also, I really don’t think B’s are “crappy.”

Cheer up! :)

Hi again, Keilinger. I know you’re nervous, and that’s understandable, but please if the 88% is beyond change at this point, my best advice to you is to keep up a healthy smile until april and treat yourself to frozen yogurt or some junk food in the meantime (after making it through 3.5 years of high school, you deserve it.)

Again, I feel like I cannot personally mirror the decision-making of the Dartmouth Admissions Office, but I feel that I can use myself as an example. Throughout my high school career, I too have been pretty bad academic record math. Heading in to Dartmouth as a prospective English Major, I’ve received 1 C in math, 1 A in math, and the rest were B’s. Yes, I’m sure I’m not alone on this when I say we’ve all got our crappy subjects. Good luck

It’s so good,i don’t see anything you need to worry about.Good Luck!

HS grades arent everything, what about SAT’s ACTs EXCrs,Sports, ect.

@ivygolfer: My GPA is the weakest part of my application, but GPA seems to be the most important criterion for admissions.

Thanks, hollow. Your experience gives me hope. :)

Depends on what math you’re in. If you make it all the way to AP level, then probably not so much.

of course!!! I know a girl who got into harvard with straight B’s in math and science. But she was the best writer I’ve ever met in my entire life! She won a ton of writing essays and I bet her english rec was THE best in my career. Hopefully the rest of your app makes up for your not-that-bad-but-average math grades!!

laugh I got into MIT with Bs in all my math classes except AP Statistics.

Granted, there were some extra circumstances. I was in a math/science/technology magnet, and those classes were graded relatively hard. I had very good science credentials, including in sciences that are math-based even at the high school level. I had 800s on both the SAT I math section and the SAT II Math IIC test, providing some evidence that I wasn’t actually bad at the subject.

But I still got in with Bs in all the “normal” math classes. Oh, and I got into five other top-20 schools as well. And I actually ended up taking several math classes at MIT beyond what was required and going into a mathy field.

My math teacher in junior year told us he got Ds in his high school math classes but became more of a mathy person in college. Another popular math teacher was also not a math person in high school. Of course, I’m sure they didn’t have 800s on their math SATs, but it’s still interesting how these things turn out.
