I will be transferring to UCLA in the fall. I will live in Rieber Terrace. I was just wondering if it would be safe to leave my laptop (or ipod, jewelry, etc) in my dorm while I'm out? I haven't heard much talk about people stealing in dorms, so I hope this isn't a stupid question.

When I was living the dorm life, I left my laptop on my desk all year long

I still have it to this day.

Just don’t do anything stupid like leaving your door open wide for everyone to see while off to class (unless your roommates are still in the room).

I would get lojack for your laptop and a lock. Buy the lojack online, its like $30 for 2 years or something. Other than that, I would just make sure you put your stuff away somewhere safe and as dhl said, don’t leave your door open. While I am sure most people don’t PLAN to steal, crime of opportunity is probably highly probable.

only your dignity.

No. They do not.

my friends who go to ucla…most living in deneve, sproul, and hedrick all never had problems with stealing. however, if you have a slutty roomate who likes to drink a lot and brings people over who like to do that stuff, they might end up messing up some of your stuff. my friend got a little scratch on her vaio from one of her roomates drunken friends but thats about it lol. i think stealing shouldnt be a problem, but you will need roomate understanding lol

Of course they do. They’re young, and broke. Plus people who do not attend college know that college students have great **** to steal like laptops and ipods. Crime rates are pretty high around colleges. My friend had his dorm cleared out while he was on winter break. Everyone who went on break got robbed in his dorm.

well if you’re smart and careful you shouldn’t lose anything

yes they do. I had my wallet stolen twice and my video ipod stolen out of my room.

and i was careful.

superstar9928 sorry to hear about your belongings. do you or anyone have any tips on how to keep my stuff safe?

where is the roommate in all of this? what do they do?

my roommate stole from me…

bar soap, cheese, ham, bread, you name it, he took it. i didn’t really mind. but it would have been nice if he could ask me, instead of looking like an idiot when he would peek over the frig to see if i was looking. yah… you idiot, i was looking.

WOW. Me and my room mates always did that to each other. College isn’t about counting how many bread slices you have… As for laptops, there is an insurance that covers that, your RA should give you a pamphlet about it, if not ask him. I didn’t buy it last year though…

its really not worth finding out if they steal or not. just take the precautionary steps needed to make sure your stuff is safe.

@ucla.bound… as if the cost is what worries me most about the potential theft of my lap top…
