How prevalent is laptop theft in the dorms?

I'll be staying in Unit 2 next year as a freshman.

I've read people's recommendations on this board to buy one of those computer locks. It looks like those things are easy to cut.

How common is it for people's laptops to be stolen from their dorm rooms?

get a good lock and use it in your dorm room. i don't know of a any thefts from the dorm rooms, better to be safe than sorry.

btw, there are a lot of types of locks available, get a good one and one that's easy to use.

Alright - this isn't really a "lock" exactly and it's more entertainment than anything else but if you have a MacBook google "iAlarmU"

It's great! It's like a car alarm for your laptop. It can fun when leaving your MacBook unattended in a coffee shop or something.

I didn't have my laptop stolen, nor did I hear about anyone getting their laptops stolen. The biggest thing is to watch your windows, and make sure that someone is watching the room if the door is open!

If you are planning on getting a lock, as I had considered before last year, don't get the Targus locks. I did some research on them, and apparently they're very easy to pick by anyone who knows a thing about picking locks.

the only way that your laptop will be stolen is if you or your roomie leave the door open. this really isnt a problem, so you shouldnt worry about it. however, i do have to admit that a person on my floor had his laptop stolen freshman year. his roomy mistakenly didnt close the door all the way when he left for class, and when he got back the laptop was gone. so....while im not suggesting buying a laptop lock (its goofy and you probably wont use it), its not bad to have one, if for no other reason than peace of mind.

This sounds like a crazy idea, but I have a feeling I'll forget to close the door.

I want to install a door closer: http://www.made-in-china.com/image/2f0j00ZTQarmtGBEHVM/Door-Closer-500-Series.jpg

These things can be purchased for around $30. Thoughts?

Those things are head-wackers. Are you going to bring a drill and a toolkit to the dorms?!?

Bringing in a small cordless drill for a day shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure that the dorm would allow you to do that. You definitely would have to ask permission before doing that.

A lot of people leave their laptops in the lounge and come back later...it's not that common and I, like others here, haven't heard of any incident in the dorms. Just make sure you don't leave it by itself (like some do) and keep it in your room locked when you go out. I don't think a lock is necessary.

the dorm doors are very heavy and close by themselves. I have never heard of anybody getting their laptops stolen. There's usually always someone in my room and I knew everybody on the floor and kept track of any strangers so it wasn't a problem for me.

Good article.

lol, nice door closer there. i lived in unit 2 last year in a double, and though i'm not sure if it applies for all the other buildings in unit 2, my door (and also my floor's doors) all locked and closed automatically. basically, we couldn't unlock them besides when we open the door, so most people resort to propping them open with door stops or forks or whatnot. as for laptops getting stolen, there was someone in my building last year who did get his laptop stolen. i didn't know him/her personally as he/she didn't live on my floor, but there were definitely lots of signs and notices that he/she posted everywhere.
