I am learning more about hwo some schools let you choose which scores to send (but have read warnings that they may be able to see other scores anyway, if the HS posts them on report cards. How does the PSAT factor in? We are thinking D should take it as a HS sophomore, as practice for the Junior yr. Can that come back to haunt her?

My daughter took it as soph. last Fall, just so she would know what to expect. At our school, no schools will ever see that score.
My DS just got a commended letter for the PSAT ( top 50,000) and we can choose 2 schools to have his score sent to ~but many here have said that is not a big deal.
Only being a Finalist matters… and we dont know who the Finalists are yet.

No, even if on the HS transcript, colleges will not care about either year’s PSAT. Except for NM recognition, colleges only care about SAT scores.

Taking the PSAT as a soph is a great idea, gives her time to prep for jr year and hopefully make NM status.

I guarantee you that PSAT scores won’t hurt anything. It is pretty common to take PSAT as a practice sophmore year.

Junior year PSAT obviously qualities you for National Merit, which is a major deal for scholarships if your D is not aiming for the top 30 in the nation.

The PSAT is a “freebie.” I’d say take it as many times as possible since it is great practice and is never used in admissions. My son took it in the 8th and 10th grade and it really helped his score.
