Hi. I really, really, really want to go to Cornell University. It is all I think about it and I'm so anxious to find out whether I'll get accepted or not. However, I just took SAT II's and I'm really depressed about how I did. I left a lot blank in the math level 2 section and I feel that this may hurt my score a lot and lower my chances of admission into Cornell.

Here are my sats:

Race/Gender: African-American Female
Major: Chemistry Education
Rank: 6 out of 410
GPA: 3.85

Extracurricular Info:
Varsity Cross Country
Varsity Swimming (Captain)
Varsity Track & Field

National Spanish Honor Society
National Music Honor Society Treasurer
Ani-Pals (animal rights) Club Treasurer

I have also been playing the piano for 12 years

Do you think I still have a good chance of admission or if doing well on SAT II's is a really important deciding factor?? Thanks, I'd greatly appreciate it.

you have a high GPA and a high class rank. These are pretty much the most important factors that Cornell looks at. SATs are important, but i dont think they'll kill you. They are a little bit low for Cornell standards, but your solid list of extracurriculars and GPA stood out the most. It's obvious you worked hard in high school and have been involved in many activities. As long as your essays/recs are fantastic, i'd say you have a pretty good shot. Good luck!

The average sat scores for African Americans are the lowest of any ethnicity in the united states, and even highly selective colleges such as cornell have disparities of sat scores of african americans and other groups such as whites or asians of up to 150-200 points. (the average non-athlete non African-American student at harvard has an SAT score of more than 1500 (1495 if you include athletes), while the average non-athlete African American at harvard has an average score of 1360)

In short, your class rank is very impressive and your sat score is 350 points above the average for your race. Your other 'stuff' is good but from the looks of things cornell is still pretty objective in its admissions, so the good GPA and good enough SAT should hold. I would be very, very surprised if you did not get in.

...not holding a grudge or anything but my 1450 may not hold up because i'm asian! >O Gotta love how AA affects people who had nothing to do with the descrimination of blacks.

i agree with much of what has been said except that class rank is one of the most important things. I hear what you're saying gomestar, but it really is NOT that important. Every high school has a different way of determining rank, some of which degrade those who are involved in music or arts. I DO however, agree that the high class rank will be an addition to her application-though it is not one of the "most important" factors.

well, i was really meaning GPA being the most important, but rank (if available) is something that will give an applicant a boost, especially if they're in the top 10%.

what how do asians avg so low? less than 600 in math? i feel ashamed for all races, SAT math is EASY!!, although i do sympathize with people who are agnosic, filing in the multiple choice sheet must be the hardest thing for them

mm... im glad you have mastered sat math, o' enlightened one.

i feel ashamed for all races too...damn whats this world coming to? 500s on math?? even those brainwashed asians? thats ridiculous...i've lost all hope in mankind
