Do test scores almost matter as much as grades?

Will a high SAT score 200+ points above the median make up for a sub-par gpa?

Possibly. As long as you show talent and intellectual curiosity in the rest of your application. Generally, high scores show you have the brains, while low gpa may indicate laziness/boredom. Some schools take it lightly, others will take it as an indication that you might not be able to succeed well in a college environment, where effort and initiative are essential.

Within reasonable boundaries it can. The computer system used to determine automatic admits (those that do not require further review beyond class rank and test score to admit) basically follows a rule that the higher your class rank the lower your test score can be and the higher the test score the lower the class rank can be. Again that is within reason. If your class rank is the lower 25% of usual admittees, you may go to full department review of your file even if you have a very high test score. The full review would go on to consider essays and other information to make a final decision. To give an example, I am aware from several years ago, that your class rank could have been as low top 17% for engineering for automatic admit if your ACT score was 36 even though the middle 50% class rank was top 11% to 3% at the time.

^^ hmm, interesting. Thanks for the info

The problem is, my school doesn't rank (I attend the #1 ranked public HS in NJ), but my gpa is ~3.4 U/W...not sure what my weighted is but i've taken all honors/APs with the exception of a few science courses. My SAT score is a 1450...

Since we don't rank, how will UIUC make a decision about my grades?

oh yeah I'm applying to LAS as an undecided

You'll get in.

thanks Guitar, any more thoughts?

<---

3.27 Weighted (school does not rank).
1430 SAT

Accepted into UIUC Computer Engineering 2 days after recieving transcripts

Edit: Should probably say I took 8 APs throughout HS, 6 currently in my senior year including AP Physics C, AP Calc AB, AP CompSci, etc.

yeah good call, found out I was accepted into LAS today
